Help. 8 to 12 speakers. Can it be done?

Featured Replies

I have an Octavia II and after trawling throught the threads on the site I could not find anything on upgrading OE speakers from standard 8 to 12. I am completely useless at diy but it may be an option to get this done if it is possible.

Has anyone attempted this?

Would it be possible to replace the tweeters and add the additional speakers?

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Are you looking to add 4 extra speakers? if so, why?

If your looking for a high quality audio experience, your far better putting the money for the 4 extra speakers, into the front component speakers.

agreed.

For better SQ and probably louder a set of good components up from will be much better.

If you are thinking of splicing the cables to enable the running of 2 speakers where there is currently one then dont. This will change the impedence and could possible damage the internal amp inside the head unit

Just wondered if anyone had attempted to upgrade from 8 speakers to 12 speakers like the option that was available for 3x speakers in each door. I also wanted to know if this would improve the sound quality of the system. But like I said I am completely useless at diy and wouldnt have a clue that it would damage the HU. :rotz:

the 3 speakers in each door will be a 3 way component set. basicaly 1 mid bass driver, 1 mid driver and 1 tweeter in each door.

Generally you find these in SQ set-up's are you can control the frequencys going to each speaker better when using an active crossover

There is a molding on the back of the door card that looks like you could cut a hole and mount a 3inch midrange behind it. The trouble is this makes up for some but not all of the crap oem speaker placement. On top of that the Stream h/units are really not very good sound quality wise.

I would personnally leave the speakers alone for the minute and aim to replace the headunit first. There have been some good results with the stock speakers and after market H/units especially if you can get one with time alignment and a decent multi band equaliser. :)

If the standard head unit has pre outs (the Fabia mark one does as standard) then you may consider a good set of components up front running off an amp, and a good quality sub if you need more bass. Also sound proofing helps.

you sure its a pre-out and not just an aux input?

There is definetely a thread on here about someone upgrading to the Skoda sound system (12 speakers plus amp). Personally I would say the cost and work involved would be rediculous. If you wanted to keep the OEM look you should try and source a Audience head unit and upgrade your existing speakers to some good components.

Thanks for all replies. I have been to visit and audio specialist who suggested a 3-way component set if it would be easy and cost effective to get new 3 speaker door cards. However for the cards alone they are £175. So that is that idea out of the window. As another option they have offered to fit 2 way components with a couple of brands to choose from. This would start from £130 fitted (they charge £30 to fit). So I will have a think about the options. Any further suggestions appreciated. I am aware of the thread on Octavia poor speaker fix but that gets to complicated for a diy numpty like me

Will they be amped?

what brands are you looking at?

Your doors will need deadening and the plastic speakers holder idealy replaced with wooden ones (birch ply if you can afford it)

The options offered were Alpine type X Pro series speakers or DLS K6 speakers or for £199 fitted the DLS C series (C6A).

I think I am going to leave it for now and keep my eye open for offers on decent speaker uprade.

Thanks again for all your help and advice.:D
