few questions

Featured Replies

Hello, Im looking at getting a fabia vrs 2003-2005 model. I currently drive a honda civic ek9 type r, i really love this car but my work has just moved buildings and its even further away now than before :thumbdwn: .I am looking for somthing with good mpg, i get about 25-28mpg with my type r and thats going easy :thumbdwn: and im looking at getting a decent diesel car to replace my type r which will eat up the miles and return me good mpg. I have always liked the vrs but never really thought about buying one untill now .I just have a few questions for you that might help me do the swap from petrol to diesel.

1) I will be wanting it chipped  but were and who are the best ppl to do it and what kind of price will i be looking at (in scotland)?

2) what sort of gains will i get from the chip and will it affect my mpg ?

3) what are the common faults and are they cheap for parts ?

im looking at getting one as standard as possible.

hey Daz, welcome to the dark side :P

1) i think Star Performance in fife seem to have the best rep for mapping around these here parts, they have a section on this site you can get a price from (sure its on their site too) and i think price is around £450

2) should be mappable to around 175bhp - 300lb/ft torque although every map is different and if getting a custom map then it will be tweaked to how you want it.

3) Faults can vary, leaky rear door seals seem to be one that springs to mind (i dont suffer from it), in the winter if your wipers are stuck to the window you can blow the fuse when operating them, back window washer hose can pop off too. serious issues tho.. not sure, i've been fairly problem free and thos i have had have been self inflicted in some way. parts arent too bad in comparison with other brands, not cheap but not mega either.

one thing to look for is if your getting a car over 60k miles, make sure its had a new timing belt and water pump, this can cost around £500+ to do at a main dealer. there arent many reports of water pumps seizing on here but skoda still recommend it be done.

a few folk have went through turbo's aswell, i think most of the cars have been mapped tho, the KKK turbo (standard vrs one) seems to be fairly weak.

buy one tho, you will love it!

cheers keith. One other thing i have seen a few rr vids of fabias getting chiped or have been chiped and noticed that they seem to smoke alot more when chiped why is this ???

This happens when standard also but it is caused by overfueling, or lack of air.

If the map makes the engine give more fuel than needed it will puff it out the back. Mine did it more standard than mapped. . . .

It can also be made worse by hot airated oil coming from the engine breather and being fed into the air intake and burnt by the engine.

Also when i get the car chiped do i have to do any other mods before they can chip it ??

If you can secure a PD160 at a fair price that will help the engine breathe a bit better, That and an after market filter.

I've a pre owned Green Cotton filter (In fair condition) rolling about my boot I'd happily part with for a brown drinking voucher!

as mike says, if you go for a map, a PD160 intake pipe (i can show you mine) and an uprated airfilter, green cotton ones seem to be commonly used and well liked, i have a pipercross which i purchase from awesome :)

ktp is your car chiped ?? i would like to fell what one is like standard and one with a chip anyone in the edinburgh area ???? also do you get a 130bhp and 150bhp fab vrs ??

Edited by dazjenks

mines isn't chipped.

ADR on edinburghcruise is talking about selling his fabia, its had a few thinsg done to it and is putting out a nice figure of 229bhp with around 300ft/lb torque.

i have no issues with letting you drive mine but the ride is a lot different with my suspension, and obviously his is a lot faster.

that would be cool ktp. i was think of anther vrs but just a chip + pd160 no other mods as thats the only mods i will be wanting . Im not wanting to go mad with tuning im getting old now :P

well just let me know anytime you wish a drive in mine. there's a few folk in the area with chipped ones, Johnny50 is one that springs to mind but given the other thread i doubt we'll see his car again :(

not sure if mikes is chipped or not.

i'm still awaiting my car returning to me, hopefully tomorrow!

Diesels will always smoke a bit when making max power because the A/F ratio to make max hp in a derv is rich relatively speaking, you can't get max power without smoke in a derv, and before anyone comments the race car dervs such as the audi le-mans car could make more power if they were allowed to blind the opposition but that's not sportsmanlike!

Don't fret about the smoke, IMHO it makes creaming "fast" cars all the more satisfactory, they KNOW they've been stuffed by a Skoda Diesel, it's so funny, especially when at the end of the conflict they have to wash their windscreen cos of all the soot on it! lol lol lol :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

PS this will make you feel better about your fVRS smoking:

I've been out in a 500bhp 700 odd lb/ft van-aaken cummins in 2002, CHRIST!!!!!!!

they could only keep tyres on it for about a week, then they used to take them back claiming the chunks had "fallen off" and they'd get new ones under guarantee every time! lol lol lol I've never seen a pick up so sideways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

to o/p

if time and work comitments permit you can have a wee shot of my car

its had a few more mods than you are intending to do at the moment

[perhaps we could try and arange a meet somewhere with a few cars with difrent mods

preferably in the central scotland area AND NOT THE FALKIRK CRUISE:eek:

yeah that would be a good idea., what sort of mpg would i be getting after chipping ??

I don't have a remap, but a Dastek piggy back computer which manipulates the ecu's standard signals, but i get the same if not better mpg with normal driving.

But i tend to bring it down to 35-45mpg with my heavy right foot! But thats still a good figure.

going from a torqueless honda to a fabia vrs will put a huge smile on your face!

instant power in every gear, and no need to kick the sh1te to get anywhere! get one, you won't regret it mate

in a way i agree and in a way i dont, i drive both these cars and love my fabia but my gf's ek9 is a fair bit quicker and handles better too, its true you have to push them hard but the fabia isn't really fast, it just feels quicker than it is due to the torque.

a never said that the fabia is quicker. when an ek9, or any type r gets going there quick!

depends on the map and the weight of the right foot however mine has a PD160 intake and green panel filter and is remapped to 177bhp by Jabbasport and trip computer tells me that on the long term trip memory of about 7000 miles average mileage is 51mpg

although a 300 mile motorway trip a couple of days ago at an average speed of 65mph (cruising at 70 and some traffic) gave me just over 55mpg ;)

Your more than welcome to a spin in mine, OEM+

that sounds good to me  also just found out that a vrs is only £110 to tax per year :cool::cool:

and if you find an early early car (pre-04 i think) they have a longer 6th gear so the mpg will go up even further :D
