I want loads of techy things but I really don't need them! I'm currently combing eBay etc for:

A floor standing data cabinet, 18 - 27U £50 ish I hope

Some fast powerline adapters for streaming media Up to £100

A rack mount server case £50.00

Some SATA 5.25 Hot Swap mounts x 3 £75.00

An Aspire Revo Atom Based Desktop For Media £200.00

Rack Mount Switch £25.00

1TB SATA Drives x 2 £120.00

2TB External Storage NAS Rack Mount £150.00 at a guess

Then i've got to run some more CAT5 in the house

One of those Lian Li XBox 360 cases £80.00

A new 32 Inch LCD for the bedroom, £300.00

So £1150.00 that I don't really have spare at the minute.

Like I said I don't HAVE to do or have any of these things but I really want them!

Is there any sort of therapy I can have? :)

I get like this, thinking wouldn't it be nice to have that, this and something else! You just have to be strong and not spend all your money!! It didn't work this week as I just bought a laptop, but I plan to use it for project work, watching dvd's when on holiday, plugging it into the car (for the engine light), and a few other things! Most of the time I try and be sensible - it needs justification for me to buy it!

I NEED an RNS510 Columbus for the car (thanks Brymer!). But cant afford one with SWMBO expecting in Dec.

I think I need to find myself a sugar Mummy or daddy that would keep me in gadgets and out of work!

Shiny-things syndrome.

We're considering building our next house rather than buying and I'm plotting cat5e throughout the house and an under stair patch panel and small server rack.

Yup... I think I suffer from this also!

Do I feel some home automation coming on?! ;)

Will be a lot easier and cheaper to run the cable in the building stage so I say go for it then decide what to do with it!

After a cabinet..?? I have this for sale if your interested, it needs to go asap!

Obviously the equipment inside is not for sale, unless you want it in which case we can come to some agreement :P

 I don't think SWMBO would be happy with me speccing a new house out with fibre, almost worth it for the geek 1337 kudos though.

I'd love to open up the cupboard and be presented with a load of der blinkenlichten.

Oooh a 24 port POE gig switch.....hmm chances of sneaking a server room into the plans...

I'm planning it when I buy a house!

Got a bid in on a 18U floor standing cabinet on eBay at the minute :o

If I win that it will go in the garage, then I will NEED the Powerline adaptors ;)

Think I may have secured myself a VoIP telephone system to install in it too, SIP trunk, VoIP Phones and PoE a bit over the top in a house??

I so want to do the whole grand designs thing myself. Trouble is finding land, and that most sexy builds cost lots of cash

I had my WHS under the stairs for a couple of weeks and it didn't half get hot under there! It's a fairly big cupboard but it heated it up quite nicely. Warm enough for me to be a bit concerned and move it back into 'my' room.

Yes it would need some sort of ventilation. Tumble dryer pipe to outside would probably do the trick for the server.

If we were building it wouldn't be Grand Designs style. Something a bit simpler from a kit maker I think. I'd still like to look at underfloor heating and some innovations like that.

Why in goodness names do you want a rack?

Unless you get a good one they are noisy as heck when populated with kit as some allow resonance to make the noise worse.

It's going in the garage, that's why I need the powerline adaptors as I have power in there but no easy way of getting CAT5 in.

If I get a big enough one I could keep my car cleaning stuff in it too :D

But why a rack????

Because you rack mount rack mountable things in them :) It's a lot neater than bunging a tower PC on a shelf with a switch balanced on top and an external drive taped to the side!

Plus it's what I do at work and i'm a bit sad about this sort of thing:

One of my favourites that I did completely from scratch, which is much preferable to following on from someones existing install.
