12v socket in hatch

Featured Replies

Evening.

When my Elegance Hatch is delivered I want to install a 12v socket into the boot area, probably behind one of the covers.

I've found this thread but it refers to having the feed permenantly live. As it will be used to trickle charge a torch and radio, I want it ignition live.

Is there a convenient supply I can tap into for it?

Thanks

is the one in the centre console ignition controlled? if it is you could tap from that?

No, that one is permanently live.

That's what I thought.

Left stuff plugged in too many times for too long to want permenantly live.

Hmm, finding switch feeds is not easy with CAN-BUS (not like it used to be in the good ol' days).

I tried to find a switched feed in the engine bay but couldn't. All sorts of strange things happened where spare terminals in the fusebox that appeared to be switched changed to perminant once a load was applied.

The only place I found proper switched feeds was in the fuse box in the dash, you could run a wire from there to the boot.

All I'd say is 'if' you do find something that appears to be switched, test it first with a load before hard wiring anything.

mines ignition controlled - happy days :o

You sure? Have you got a MK2 Octavia?

If you plug something into it without the engine/ignition being on i bet it starts charging/working

It's reasonably easy to run wiring from the boot through the door sills to the fuse box by the driver's door. I did this for trailer electrics about month ago. There should be a load of free fuse spaces in the fuse box unless your car is ridiculously well specced. One side of the fuse will have contacts in it, the other side can be connected to the plug you want to install using a spade connector through the back of the box. Only thing I'm not sure of is whether the fuse spaces in the fuse box are permanently live or not. Some poking around with a voltmeter should answer that question.

If you have a CD changer in the boot you could steal a few watts off that to run low power items.

run a +12v switched from the fuse box along the drivers side sill area and then use the correct connector from skoda to mount it in the boot IMHO.

Easiest way.

Its a mk2. I pushed the cigerette lighter down last night with no keys in the ignition. It didn't work. I will test something else to rule out my cig lighter isn't fecked. Not that it will be as it isn't used.

My iPhone Socket charger always works wether keys in or not

My TomTom power lead worked with the ignition off. I've just installed a socket in the boot of my vRS hatchback with the plan of hooking up to a spare fuse slot in the fuse box. Havent done the final connection as my multimeter batteries were dead when i did the install but i'll get around to it at somepoint this week hopefully. Its a simple install, just be careful if you go the whole hog & remove the plastic sills not to lose or break any clips!

I've never checked whether the cigarette lighter works with the ignition on, the button doesn't stay down when the ignition is off anyway. The lighter socket is powered all the time when anything is plugged in to it however.

thats neat, good when you leave the kids in the car, they can't set fire to anything

Provided my lighter isn't faulty, it does mean that there's some change to the power socket between when the ignition is on and when it's off though...

Dismantling the centre console is way too much of a pain for me to want to look in there for laughs though - I briefly looked at running wires into the centre console while fitting an MP3 player plug to the radio and ended up putting it in one of the button blanks under the air con instead (Turned out better anyway because I could connect a friend's GPS to the radio speakers using the same lead as I usually use to go to the combi box). I'll check the lighter this evening when I get home and if it works with ignition on I'll look for electrical contacts specific to the lighter that you might be able to use.

  • 4 weeks later...

I've wired one up in the little cubby hole to the right of the steering wheel.

It means I can use it for the sat nav and use the other one for my cool box.

Didn't take much doing either because it is next to the fuse box. You just find an unused

fuse and wire it up.I picked an ignition controlled one and also used an inline fuse for extra security.

The driver's cubby hole is a very cunning choice of spot to put the plug in :)... Turns out my cigarette lighter doesn't stay down with the ignition on either, so it's probably broken. Luckily its only use is to stop things falling into the socket when nothing else is plugged in...
