Whining noise vRS

Recommended Posts

for the past few months i have noticed a strange "screetch" noise when lifting the clutch up in 5th gear only. it doesnt really do it at low revs but 50+ mph in 5th and it is there. also when i lift off in 5th i get a high pitched whine that disapears when i put the clutch in.

any ideas guys? its driving me nuts at the moment.

If it's only doing it in 5th, likely to be one of the bearings on the second output shaft. Drain gearbox oil and check for swarf, refil with gearbox oil and see if noise reduces, or possibly even stops.

When you depress the clutch, the torque loading on the gear teeth changes direction (due to engine braking). e.g. the road wheels drive the engine, rather than the normal engine driving the wheels.

Strange it's not doing it in 6th gear though, as that shares the second output shaft, with 5th and reverse gears.

Clutch release bearing would do it in all gears, as would the diff.

It may also be 5th gear syncro hub.

All those things sound expensive to rectify...would i be aswell just buying a used low milaege box should the worst happen?

I'm nipping to TPS in a bit so will buy some gear oil to try.

Not going to be cheap if it is the gearbox bearings, that's for sure. Options are to fit a good second hand box from a scrappy, worth doing the clutch release bearing while the box is out. Or, have the box repaired by a transmission specialist (hard to find a good one, and the box may make different noises after a rebuild). Last and please sit down, new box which I believe costs about £1,800 + fitting. (Or that might be the inclusive price.)

Worth doing the oil change first, you never know till you tried. I'll be trying everything else before a new gearbox goes in, £1800:eek:

I will try voodoo with a bra on my head before i pay £1800 for a new gearbox! i will get a local place to change the oil as there seems to be a weird shape drain plug on the vRS.

Put enough cotton wool in the in the bra, and you wont hear it anyway

Just an after thought, make sure the noise isn't torque specific. There is an off-chance it could be something cheapish, like the Aux drive belt and tensioner. Try loading the electrics with full beam, heated rear screen, aircon on full blast, if noise happens lower down the rev band, it will not be the gearbox.

The box should be tough enough, as VAG used in the VR6 range with 150Kw of power.
