Lowering options for FL VRS

Featured Replies

I will soon be ordering a white VRS DSG diesel, but after looking round one today I believe there is a good 25/30mm of decent drop space. I asked in the showroom today and they advised that Skoda do a spring kit for £423 fitted which would drop around 20mm and would also be covered by Skoda's warranty.

I want to do it right as I need it to be warranteed for my company's requirement and also if I choose to buy the car after but I have a few questions that I hope the Skoda experts will have answers to! Incidently I cover about 90k in my cars over 3 years. And no the stiffness wouldn't be an issue as I used to have a Clio Cup that I did about 40k in a year. My buttocks are already as tight as being trapped in a lift with Elton John and Dale Winton.

1) Is 20mm enough? Does anyone have a shot of a VRS (appreciate it will be pre-facelift)

2) Does the FL VRS sit lower than the current VRS out of the factory?

3) For £423 for warranty piece of mind am I being too cautious as would changing springs cause me a problem anyway?

4) I have asked if I supply the springs (probably Eibach 25mm/30mm drop) would they warranty it if THEY fitted them.

5) How long do springs last anyway? i will probably do 90k in 3 years?

5) Would someone like Awesome GTI ;) do the work and cover it with some kind of guarantee, bearing in mind I do decent mileage.

That is all! :)

1) Yes in my opinion. If you want the slammed look, you'll need coilovers.

2) Don't think so from the pictures I've seen. I would be very surprised if a facelift were to include a major suspension revision.

3) If you're going for the Skoda-approved route, I'd go for the complete package of Eibach springs and dampers. Seeing the annual mileage you do, I think the standard dampers might not stay the course.

4) I tried this with my dealer and they didn't want to know. Said they could only fit Skoda-approved parts (the fact that they were Eibach anyway seemed beyond their capability to understand!).

5) Eibachs are very well made (powder-coated) and will last well beyond that mileage.

6) Sorry, not aware what warranties are offered by after-market suppliers.

One other thought - many on this forum (including me) have paired their Eibachs with Koni FSD dampers which gives you superb handling on cross-country roads and a cossetting ride on Motorways. Not cheap, but well worth considering.

Hope that helps.

According to the Skoda press release:

The sports-tuned chassis has been lowered to 127 mm

Not sure what it was on the pre-facelift tho.

Going by the brochure!! The FL vRS has 128mm Ground clearance. In the same brochure the LE vRS (I assume based on the older version?) is the same. Looking at an older brochure they have the vRS sitting at 140mm, same as the std Octavia:confused:, guess that is yet another typo on the brochure, well at least its the older brochure now.

I will probably have another close look at a vRS again in the showroom to check the standard ride height. I think a 32mm drop over the standard Octavia would be ample especially filled with matt black 18" Neptunes

I always thought that the 'Sport' dampers as fitted on the upgrade 'sport' pack for an Elegance or L&K are the same as the uprated dampers fitted to the vRS

Koni FSDs are an excellent option, if you can get them (I have heard that supplies are limited at present)

Yes; unless you are into a really 'dropped' look; I suggest a search on here as there are several threads with pics of lowered vRSs

Same height as far as I know i.e. 10mm (IIRC) lower than a 'standard' Octy. Remember that 'Sport' (Eibach) springs will lower a Standard car by 30mm, so only lower a vRS by 20mm.

3) For £423 for warranty piece of mind am I being too cautious as would changing springs cause me a problem anyway?

You ought to be able to haggle this price a bit. The springs, made by Eibach, are only c. £135 so the rest is labour. Changing springs will not cause you a problem but with your Company/Leasing connection getting a warrantied jod done is the best route to go.

4) I have asked if I supply the springs (probably Eibach 25mm/30mm drop) would they warranty it if THEY fitted them.

You can get Eibachs £25-£30 cheaper than a dealer from the likes of Awesome GTI or JKM but your dealer will then not be able to put a warranty on the job. As to fitting non OE parts, some dealers will and some won't (I know from experience).

5) How long do springs last anyway? i will probably do 90k in 3 years?

You should be OK on this sort of mileage but it will depend on the roads you use and the load you carry. However, if you go everywhere with a fully (over) loaded boot your rear springs/dampers may only last 50-60,000 miles or less.

5) Would someone like Awesome GTI ;) do the work and cover it with some kind of guarantee, bearing in mind I do decent mileage.

You will get Eibach's normal warranty (one year/12,000 miles?) but beyound that; No.

That is all! :)

Good useful information there mate. 30mm drop on standard and 20mm on vRS comment ties in to the dealer estimate of ''roughly a 20mm drop''.

Thanks guys

  • 6 months later...

tried searching but can anyone direct me to a few pics of a lowered FL octy vrs estate?

cheers

i got my new candy white FL vrs wagon yesterday - eibach's and koni fsd being fitted on monday. once they're on i'll take some pics. n.b. my wheels are already a dark anthracite colour.

from my experience - OE parts fitted by the dealer @ PDI should be covered by manufacturer full warranty ie 3 yrs. same part fitted yourself or after delivery will be covered by the "parts" warranty which is normally 12 months. to be honest i think this is pretty irrelevant - eibach TUV approved springs are v unlikely to fail IMO..

also, a rsbspt above made reference to skoda approved spring AND DAMPERs. i don't think such a thing exists. for a vrs, you can have skoda accessory eibach springs but there are no accessory dampers that are suitable for the vrs. this is why i went for some KONI fsd.

hth

cheers

Rob

Got eibachs fitted to my FL Vrs. Posted some photos a while back, check out my previous postings and you should find them. Got to add that it improves the looks no end but still looks oem and should be the way they come out of the factory as standard.

This isn't listed in the accessories brochure. Is it definitely a dealer fit option or is it done at build time? I only ask, ask I'm pretty certain my dealer doesn't have the ability to check wheel alignment, which I assume will need to be done after fitting new springs.

The on-line accessory site seems to be down at the moment. I can confirm it IS a skoda accessory, part number ZGB1Z3071677 cost £138 (from memory) plus whatever the dealer wants for fitting. I can also confirm its still available as my car (sitting in the car park outside my window) delivered new yesterday has these in a nice new box in the boot ready for fitting next week.

Yes its best practice to check aligment after fitting - I'd be very surprised if a dealer did not have this facility. Its pretty fundamental bit of kit for any service operation.

thanks,

I asked my dealer to check the tracking on my fabia when it last went in for a service, and they told me they couldn't. Is this the same equipment used for full alignment checks?

I'm very tempted to look into the spring kit on my Octy (built yesterday).
