Driving License Categories

Featured Replies

I can't make sense of the DVLA website for what categories I can or can't drive.

I only passed my test in 2000, so have B and B1 on my license.

Does a transit (as like you would hire to move some stuff) count as

"Motor vehicles with a MAM not exceeding 3500kg having not more than eight passenger seats with a trailer up to 750kg." (i.e. category B)

or would it count as:

"Vehicles between 3500kg and 7500kg" (i.e. category C1) ?

B most likely

Transit is C1.

Transit is C1.

Really?! Surely that would mean you had to do a different test to drive one?! I'm not convinced that a Transit exceeds 3.5tonnes...

Seems I am wrong, and transits are B1.

You definitely need to pass another test to drive a transit if you passed your test after a certain date in 1998 (Not 100% sure on that date so feel free to correct me on that).

I passed in March 2001 and I cannot drive them at work. The wife passed in 1998 and is the same as me.

Transit Connects, Peugeot Experts and the like are fine on your normal licence.

So I wasnt going mad then. Was sure SWMBO couldnt as got a leaflet back with her licence saying it was another test.

I passed my test after the date in 1998 giving me the restriction of classes of vhiecle I can drive, and i had driven long wheel base Transits, Mesc Sprinters and Luton vans, all hired and have had no problems with my licence when checked.

I do have a restriction on no more than 8 seats though and with towing large trailers, which is a real problem for people of my age and younger, as I am involved in helping with the scout organisation, and we are gradually running out of people who can drive mini busses for us to take the kids away.

 Well I passed in 2003 and hired a std Transit in 2005 to move home.

My understanding is from DVLA leaflet INF45 and the same as Wet Kipper's description. Can't remember exactly what I did but I recall I did ask about weights and stuff and I was told I was ok. DYOR.

Check out dvla leaflet INF28. In some circumstances you can drive a 16 seater

It changed on 1st January 1997 :)

Any transits under 3.5T can be driven on B (clue is 350 may appear in the Transit's model name). Any transit between 3.5T and 7.5T is C1.

Your average SWB Transit will weigh under 2 tonnes and have a maximum payload of less than 1.5 tonnes so you should be fine to hire one.

B1 refers to Trikes and Quads under 550kg :P but otherwise I agree :)

Oops - still waiting for the coffee to kick in :o Edited to correct ;)

Being old it would appear I can drive upto 7500kg + drag upto a total of 12,000kg

Also entitled to drive any size of bike on L plates :eek:

And it would appear that I have a full moped license. woopy doo

I've hired a few SWB Transits and I passed in 2003, never had a problem!

I passed my test in 2001 and can drive a short wheel base transit van and have had no probs in fact I'm driving a transit tomorrow to help my aunt to move stuff to my late grandfathers house and take stuff to the tip.

Yes I think you may be right. I seem to recall if it is for a non-commercial use. So you could drive a school or scout one etc but would encounter problems if driving for a private organisation.

I have a D and D1 on my license so this isn't a problem for me anyway.

All very scary thoughts! :P

I passed my test in 2002(?) and have previously hired a Luton van, with tail lift, with no worries. The hire eas all in my name and I was sole driver. This was from a large van hire company whose name I cannot remember

Ah the pleasure of passing pre 1998.

Get all the little extra allowances on the license - it's crazy really, but I'm not going to complain.

are you sure ? i thought it was just 125cc

yep , i got one of those , don't need to do a CBT either :)

Same here - I have hired a 7.5T wagon in the past and I actually did use my full moped licence when I bought my first 50cc scooter.

Just realised i've had my licence 21 years.

Stick to single wheel Transits/Sprinters etc, and you should be fine, the twin rear wheel versions tend to be between 4.2 and 7.5 GVW which you will need C1 entitlement if you passed your test after 1st July 1997. Ones to look for as example are Transits with 260 upto 350 on the badging, or Sprinters with three digits starting either with a 2 or 3 e.g 211 or 313. Minibuses ok if not for hire or reward, i.e if you are getting paid for driving it.

I could just see you pootling around on a moped.

Had mine since Oct 95, so I can drive all kinds of useless stuff too
