Smoke Fliter?

Featured Replies

Hi, Is there such thing as a smoke filter maybe not called that. Stops or lessens the smoke out of the exhaust when booting it?

thanks

Um.... a particulate filter...

There is - it's called a DPF and you don't want one. They're nothing but trouble. What's the problem with a bit of soot?

A 2" cork? :D

I guess in theory you could put 3 or 4 catalytic convertors in line which would help a little bit. I have a spare cat if you want to try it :D

Without a PF, the only real cure is not to boot it?

A red marigold rubber glove works, but when you hit the loud pedal it looks like you are being chased by a very large chicken. :D

Hehehehe... very very funny.

Back on topic, I find I get less smoke when I fill up with something expensive like V-Power or Ultimate. I think.. I hope its not a case of selective-smoke-not-there-noticing.

To be fair I dont care about my smoking problem. Ask the boys who were at awesome this weekend.

If anything I need to buy the devils own kit to calm it down

Black Smoke = A good thing

Black smoke is related to incomplete combustion.

A derv always runs air rich, so you should get more complete combustion, however if the revs are too high and you're putting a lot of fuel in then some of it will come out unburned.

Easiest thing to do is make sure you put a clean air filter in the car regularly and use fuel from petrol stations with a reasonably high turn over.

Also give it a good run out using the turbo reasonably regularly (not hard just over 2k revs) as if you stay off the turbo all the time then use it hard you will blow out all the soot that's accumulated in the exhaust.

I found the Miller's Diesel Sport 4 additive helped keep the soot output down, when I had my Fabia. But it's just a function of having a diesel, especially when tweaked/remapped :)

And quite right, you don't want a PD engine with a particulate filter anyway. They were never designed to have one anyway - nothing but trouble on the whole.
