Henry Surtees dies after a racing accident today...... at Brands Hatch

Just saw the accident on youtube and it is so unlucky! But a whack to the head from a complete wheel & tyre flying through the air is going to do some serious damage! :thumbdwn:

No way! , i watched this race! but did'nt hear what happened to him, thats real sad news. A car had spun off and crashed into the barrier sending one of his back wheels into the on coming path of Henry Surtees car it bounced on the track and then hit him on his crash helmet, result was Henry Surtees drove straight of at the next bend with no control what so ever, no attempt to stop or turn.

Sorry link posted as i was typing this.

yup not like it was a massive accident - getting hit ont he head by a wheel is about as freak as it gets - vid is here

Unreal, just seen it on YouTube. What are the chances of that?

You could clearly see he was totally out of it, as it looked like he still had the throttle pressed when he eventually came to a halt, by the exhaust smoke at the back.

Terrible.

His son! :(

Very very unlucky and very unfortunate :(

RIP....and such a freak accident

Wow, shocking.

Didnt Roland Ratzenburger also die from a run away tyre?

That's incredibly freaky, a one in ten thousand chance :( RIP.

Ratzenberger's front wing failed and he hit the wall at near 200mph, breaking his neck.

Brands hatch claims another life, not long ago a biker died there didnt he.

Such a shame, only 18! Complete freak accident..

RIP fella so unlucky thoughts go to the family motorsport is a dangerous sport and yes thats 2 deaths at brands in not such a long time.....a sad loss he was an up and coming star. and in the race before this manged his first podeum in f2...

why are the wheels not strapped like f1 cars

why are the wheels not strapped like f1 cars

I read somewhere that wheels are strapped in F2, but maybe whatever caused this wheel to come off, surpassed even the straps capabilities (and ironically took the wheel on it's trajectory than if it hadn't been strapped? :()

The guy who crashed was a friend of Henry who is also 18, must be having a pretty tough time now.

I know that weekend a wheel came loose and hit someone, which is why we have high cockpits and tethers for the wheels.

When Senna crashed, he was basically hit in the face by his own front wheel. A suspension component went through his visor. A freak occurrence.

No matter how designs change and what precautions are taken, death will find a way to reach someone.
