Anyone else ordered a heated windscreen?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Last Thursday I confirmed my order with my dealer for a new Superb 170CR Elegance with several optional extras. One extra was the heated windscreen which has just been added to the optional spec.

Almost a week on, I asked if the order was placed and the reply was that the "system" does not yet allow them to order this extra.

The delivery date is long enough away without all this hassle. Has anyone else experienced this?

If the 'system' doesn't let them order that code, then there is a manual process that they can follow which will.

My car had to be ordered the manual way, as the option codes were messed up with regards to my heated rear seats and rear sunblinds.

Keep putting pressure on the dealer, as they should know how to do this the old fashioned way.

Issue resolved and car is now on order. Many thanks to Mike at my local dealers and apologies for being such a pain.

The heated screen is,in my opinion, a very valuable addition to the Superbs already excellent spec and I expect many propective customers will add it to their order.

As in element in the screen like ford do?

I thought they had a patent on this which is why no one else has it

I thought that too..... But we may be wrong......

Unless they do like a finnish (?) firm do on houses, and just have elements at the edges

Sod that, not worth having :(

AFAIK Ford only have the Patent to call it a "Quickclear" Screen not so that nobody else can use it.

Some Audi's have it as an Option & Some of the higher ones have it as standard.

They are very good as i have had 3 fords with it on and was definately worth it in the winter.

I can't see why in this day and age of technology that all cars don't have it.

If it's an option on whatever car i get next then i will definately spec it.

Heated windscreens are nothing new, they have been fitted to many makes for years. The Bentley Continental S1 I used to drive in the early 1960's had one. An extremely fine gold wire element was inserted between the two layers of glass. The element was so fine it was only visible at certain angles in sunlight.

Originally came from the aircraft industry i believe, and Bentley's owners over the years have long had ties with that industry

It's one of those features that never seemed to have caught on...I always thought that it may have been because;

1 patent issues

2 insurance companies not liking them

I had a Ford with one once and it is a great feature.

I drove a Ford with it fitted a few years ago, and found it rather distracting to be honest....

Would still be a nice option for those cold mornings though :)

Yes, it really is off putting on a ford. Wearing glasses It bugs the hell out of me, and when in use makes everything seem fuzzy.

Other glass wearers I work with say the same thing.

Its made its way on to the new Mazda 3 and I'd driven about 15 miles the other day before I noticed it. Can't say it bothered me (and my glasses).

Nice feature for cold mornins but I don't how much I'd pay for it as an option.

There's a few comments on Ford related forums about the windscreen being a bit funny at night with oncoming headlights, but just as many comments from people saying they have no issues with it!!

I wear glasses or contact lenses and am unsure how or why that should make any difference.

Personally if I had the option I would go for it. Winter is just around the corner and iced windscreens are a right pain!

I once bought one of those plug in windscreen demisters and heaters from Ebay and it was really, really rubbish. Might try a hairdryer on a 12-240V converter this winter - so look out for a "blown fuse" post from me about December time

If a heated front screen is available on any new car, I would always have it.

On my 3rd car with it, a Galaxy and now 2 Focus

Great in the winter and capable of melting solid ice in less than a minute, brilliant

Yup, but a PITA if you have a chip. They crack so easily IME.

Driving focuses at work I think the quickclear screens are excellent. I only ever notice the heating elements if I actually look for them. I don't wear glasses though.

The other issue some have reported with them is that the elements interfere with Sat Navs as they block the GPS signal.

This can be the case with portable units, including my Garmin nuvi660, but wouldn't affect a built-in SatNav. Certain types of polarising sunglasses make things slightly more distracting, IME.

Ford may have had a patent on it, but a patent does expire.

FWIW I'd probably rather have an engine preheater for cold weather

Ford did have a patent No. 4004126 Jan 18 1977 Expiry date Jan 18 1994, which was an improvement on an earlier one, not found if renewed but by then most likely designed another.

Pilkington have a patent on another type of windscreen, no doubt other manufacturers also have their own patents.

Is it possible to have a heated windscreen retrofittet to an Superb? It is not a question of price, but will any dealer do it? I wanted a heated screen as they where available on the Mk I Superb. But the Norwegian importer said it was against ther policy to have heated windscreens as they tended to crack due to temperature differences between freezing outside air temp and heated windscreen temp.

I had the heated windscreen in my '03 Ford Focus as an option, and got two windscreens cracked due to flying stones / tire studs / misc. crap during the 5 years that I had it. I figured that the heated screen must be softer than a regular laminated screen - maybe the heater gradually softens it up.

Anyway, I'd order one any day because in cold wet weather it is just amazing how fast you get a clear screen compared to just standard defogging.
