Wondered if anyone had any ideas when the above conversion would become necessary i.e. when are 'they' going to switch off the 'old' signals? Don't think it is imminent but does anyone out there have any more definite info?

Yes, OFCOM are proposing that the AM bandwidth will be sold off, and many radio stations transferred to DAB in 2015. There will be some stations left on FM, but not necessarily thos there now. A worrying factor that they ignore is that mainland Europe uses a different DAB system to us in the UK. Due to the number of DAB radios already in use in homes, it is unlikely that we will adopt the European system. So if you want to be able to use your car radio in the UK and Europe, it will need to be a dual-system radio rather than a cheap DAB add-on.
