After market HID conversion.

Recommended Posts

Just thought this may be of use for anybody that may be considering fitting an after market HID conversion Kit (legal issues aside).

I had previously tried to fit a "cheap" HID kit last year but could'nt get them to work so returned them and binned the idea.

I have been toying with the idea of fitting one of the more expensive kits (£200+) that others on the forum had used with good results, but thought this was a bit steep.

However yesterday I took a gamble and bought another kit from a company called HIDS-DIRECT in Manchester, after speaking with a girl called Sarah she was certain their Audi ultra+ kit would work on my late 2008 Octy vrs. Ordered it about 2.30pm and recieved it 8.30am this morning, fitted it and it works great without any error messages or flickering/ shutting down. The best part is that the kit only cost £74.99 plus £6.50 carriage.:D

Unfortunately I changed my mind at the last minute and ordered 4300k OEM bulbs rather than the 6000k I originally wanted. I wasnt entirely happy how these looked on the car, but a quick call to Sarah and she is sending a set of 6000k bulbs overnight to me, and will then refund me when the 4300k bulbs are sent back.:D:D:D

I really cant knock their customer service.

Obviously I cant comment about the longevity of these kits, but I suppose only time will tell.

This was the same kit i was looking at getting as opposed to the more expensive kits, glad its confirmed it works ok in the Octy, know plenty of people running them in Audi's with no worries & no one had complained about the kits failing early. Any chance of you posting a pic of the 4300k & the 6000k as im as yet undecided what to get myself??!!

Due to the leagl implications I refuse to do the upgrade on my own vRS.

Yer I know - things would probably be fine, but I'm not risking it.

However a friend of mine is currently looking to upgrade his.

He has been looking at the HIDS4U Ultimate kit - however as you say the whole kit is around £200.

However it does definitely work - as a few people on these forums will confirm.

So just to confirm.

The package you purchased was from:

Welcome to HID-Direct, We’re your no1 U. K supplier of HID products

Under the heading (just before the New Products)

HIDS DIRECT Ultra HID xenon converison kits for:

Audi A2, A3 (Except Sportsback), A4, A6, A8 & TT kit £74.99 inc VAT

Hi Nicky,

I will only be able to post a photo of the 6000k as I've already posted the 4300k bulbs back. They looked rather similar to the Philips Extreme bulbs I had been using only a hell of a lot brighter (imaging a whiter light to a standard bulb).

However,I wanted something to better match the led sidelights that I have fitted with a slight blueish light similar to Mercs OEM HIDS if you see any about.

If you need any help call Sarah at HIDS-DIRECT on 0161 793 9236.

I'll try to post some pics of the 6000k when I fit them over the weekend.

Yup thats the one, I got mine through their E-bay shop though. Get your friend to call Sarah at HIDS-DIRECT on 0161 79392636 for more advice. They do a super duper kit for £150 which is guarenteed to work on any car, but as this Audi kit works on Octys then I cant see the point.

I currently have a FR Leon and have the 6k HIDS4U kit fitted. Bear in mind that the Leon headlights are not projector like the Octavia. I like the 6k light but am considering getting the 4.3k when I get the VRS. I also have a PIAA LED 6.5k lights fitted to my Leon. First picture is of the LED sidelights the second is of the 6k anti-glare HID. I think the protector style light on the Octavia will give a more realistic rounded light too

Hi Nicky,

Unfortunately I did'nt get time to fit the kit on weekend, hoping tonight so photo's will follow. The LED side lights are from E-bay, same as others on the forum have bought from Italy but this is a U.K. seller. Look for "No error white SMD T10 501 side/parking lights" from ALLTRONIX-LTD ( sorry not yet worked out how to put in a link) cost £14.99 plus postage.

I was blinding people even with washer, projectors and 2 MOT centres saying it's all correctly aligned. Bearing that in mind anybody who even considers running them in reflector lamps deserves to fail an MOT or get pulled as they glare like mad in every car i've seen as soon as they leave the flat roads. This is even with the "anti Glare bulbs".

You can now get the LED light's from Autobulbs direct

See here: LED Sidelights

They are the same and i've ordered a set for mine as the ones i got off ebay are causing problems.

They are either saying the sidelight isnt working (it comes on for 5 secs then goes off) other times it works fine. Also everytime i get in the car i get an error message saying one or both of the front indicators is out. As soon as i switch on the indicator it flashes rapidly (as if the bulb is out) for 2-3secs then goes to normal and the bulb warning disappears.

Will try the Autobulbs ones and if they don't work will go back to Bluevision

One HID conversion fitted, looked good in the dark last night giving off a nice white/blue light and did not appear to be any more dazzling than my Philips Extreme bulbs. Whole job was straight forward only taking about 40 mins in total. I even tried them without the supplied in-line resistors and was suprised to find they still worked without any error displays. Rough install guide is:

**Make sure ignition is off**

1. Remove headlamp units from the car and drill a hole in the white plastic in the side of the unit ( just forward of the wire retainer for the clear plastic box on rear of unit).

2. Replace standard bulb with HID bulb ( identical fitting) and connect the two spade connectors attached to the HID bulb to the block connector which usually pushes onto the standard bulb's connectors.

3. Feed the 3 wires which go to the Ballast through the drilled hole and then plug with the attached rubber grommet. Mate the male/female connectors to their counterparts on the Ballast. (You may wish to use some electical tape to double secure these as one connector did seem slightly loose to me when mated).

4. Replace headlamp unit into car and secure the ballasts to a suitable place under the bonnet. ( I have fixed mine to the back of the clear plastic boxes at the rear of the headlight unit with specialist VHB double sided tape, will let you know how secure these remain).

5. Start engine and admire your work.

I did try to take some pics of finished work but could'nt get any decent results as am taking directly into strong light. Will try again and post any suitable ones.

Hope this is of use.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sorry to bring this old thread back up.

We're currently fitting a sit of these HIDs to my friends car.

So far so good - was scary making 25mm holes but it's done.

Now at the stage of wiring.

THe two wires that would normally attach to the back of the main beam bulb is now wired into the HID unit.

The two wires are:

Brown

Purple & Orange

Which of these is live and which is negative?

I am assuming brown will be live - so to red on the HID kit and purple & orange is nagaive, so to black on the HID kit.

Can somebody just confirm for me before I blow myself, my friend and his Octy up?

Well in typical style - so far so bad :(

At the present stage I've only finished fitting the kit to one of the lights.

We replaced that into the car and we decided we'd make sure that one was working before we did the other one.

Switched on ignition, some noises from under the hood and the blown bulb warning light comes on and stays on.

OP says he didn't actually use the extra resistor pack included in the pack with his lights and they worked just fine.

Do you think all I'll probably need to do is add that resistor pack?

Or could it be the fact I've only got one fitted along with the standard halogens in the other cluster at the moment?

Here are some pics of my wiring - extra points if anybody spots a silly mistake I may have made :)

Altifox, does that shop in Manchester have an online store? Sadly I'm way out in the Caribbean and no Skoda Accessories are available in our half of the globe.

If not, can you tell me the make and model number of the HID kit so I can check if mainland US may stock it for Audi owners there?

I decided on the new Smoked Devil's Eyes from Superskoda.com but if I can get a decent HID kit I'll go for that.

Thanks

btw Outstanding thread guys!!:cool::)

To check the polarity, get yourself a voltmeter, set to volts and put one probe on each wire. If you get it right the display will say +12V, if you get it wrong it will say -12V. Typically in auto electrics brown is - , so you really need to check. Could also be why its not working, but you may have already damaged the ballast.

Yay - success!

We added the in-line resistor pack but that made no difference.

So, we decided to swap the wiring on the inside (the bit I asked about yesterday).

Initially I went with the recommendation of Brown being negative and the purple & Orange being live.

Swapped these around - so Brown to red and Purple & Orange to black.

Switched on ignition, got the same whine noise but no bulb warning light!

Switched on the lights and we're there - both HIDs burst into life.

I shall take a picture later tonight once it gets darker so you can see the results.

We've also fitted the LED side lights as well, so everything is looking very white up front.

Off now to find a garage on a Sunday (so probably a fruitless search) that could do an alignment check.
