Glovebox lining

Featured Replies

Has anyone lined their glovebox? If so, with what?

Having finally got the Oct on the road, anything in the glovebox just rattles, due to the cheap plastics. I want to line it with something, wondered if anyone else can give me tips on what works well.

Also, does the glovebox light stay on all the time with the lights? Mine does, and it shines through the door, which is really annoying when its very dark

Cheers

The MK1 glovebox, if fitted correctly should not rattle. The one in my old vRS was silent despite being removed loads of times. if you can see light through the gaps, that suggests to me that the door is not correctly adjusted.

The light should also go off when the door is closed, even with the lights on. There is a switch which is depressed when the door is closed. Check the wiring carefully and also the mechanism as its quiet complex and falls apart quiet easily when disconnecting the wiring.

Its not the glovebox, but the contents.

At the moment my glovebox is empty except for sunnies and locknut, and both just rattle against the plastic of the glovebox.

My old beemer had a felt like lining, and never suffered the problem. So im thinking of doing that to the Oct

My light stays on as well but if I push the door a little then it goes out. Confirms what mannyo says about it needing adjusting. I've not taken it appart yet so not sure how easy it is. Another job to add to my endless list of things to do.

As for lining it, you could just get some matterial and glue it in with spray adhesive. It would probably be quite difficult to get a good result though due to all the curves.

Removing the glovebox is really easy - three torx screws at the top, tow at the bottom and it just pulls out.

Finally fixed the light staying on. Just took out the buld holder which incorperates the switch (not as easy to get out as I thought it should be) and bent the switch a bit. Seems to work fine now, just like the fridge light.... at least I think the fridge one turns off when I close the door..!

(Only took 5 months to get around to doing it!)

My glovebox used to have a light but when I took it out for some reason it all came apart. After nearly 2 hours trying to put it back together with my fat fingers, I got annoyed with it and threw all the pieces into the ash tray, locked the car and went inside to sulk.

Mine fell apart but after a few cans of beer and a couple of hours swearing, it went back together. It was like one of those brain teasers you get in Christmas crackers but without a cheat sheet.

What really annoys me is that small objects (like pens but also some bigger things) get trapped in the hinge when closing the glove box. I thought about putting a piece of thick leatherette pvc across the hinge line, shaped so that it rises up like an inverted V as the box is closed. Anyone else got this problem or a solution?

I put some of that anti slip rubbery matting in mine to stop the rattles.
