Scout TDi hesitant ?

Featured Replies

 Hi all, I have of last week puchased a facelifted Scout 2ltr TDi, I know it still wants running in but it seems hesitant/turbo delay when setting off, have there been any reported problems or is it down to the tightness of the engine ? cheers - Stuart.

Give it time , don't over run it in , mine had done 8000 mils befor it started to loosen up and give good fuel mpg know on 32000 it pulls like a train and get 45 + mpg o and it will use oil , mine is a pd not sure wats in new ones

:o There is a big delay ( 1-1.5 sec ) before the turbo picks up when setting off and I didn't have it on my last Octavia 1.9 TDi, when the turbo does kick in it flys and going between gears its OK its just when you set off in first theres this black hole :o

its still the PD engine - Stuart.

Is it a manual gearbox or a DSG ? There have been a few reports of DSGs in Golfs causing delays in delivering power to the wheels when starting off from rest (IIRC dodgy mechatronic control units).

Its a manual, if I set off in first then I only get to about 10-15mph and theres a tubo lag, if I set off just start moving and then go into second you don't get the lag ? have any other scout owners had the same problem ? in first gear its just like a normal diesel, ie without turbo and then you hit the brick wall. cheers - Stuart. :o

Hmmm, 1st Gear is especially low on the Scout and 4x4 to provide more grunt and manageable torque when towing or off-road.

As a result you're not in it for long in on-road situations as it this makes it quite "short", are you sure it's not just this you're noticing?

Will try and hoof it from standhill out the car park in 5 mins and get back to you........:)

Hoofed it........

.....never analysed pulling away in such detail before........

.....basically it's "slow" to just past 1500rpm then the rev needle very rapidly moves to 4500rpm and I'm at about 25mph. Under normal, "non hoofing" driving, I tend to change around 2000rpm as its getting unneccesarily noisy and 2nd has better legs if you're wanting a quick pull away. At that you've barely got going through the rev range and are somewhere around 15mph.

If you're "driving" rather than changing as early as possible all subsequent gear changes drop you in around 1500rpm to pick up the sweet spot between there and around 3000rpm so they won't feel as laggy as first gear.

Hope that helps?

Niall

(Well run in mind, I'm at just past 40k miles)

Hi Niall, thanks for trying that, yes it is very slow in picking up from 0-1500 rpm in first gear and there is just no pull, its a very differant drive to my last Ocy ( you put your foot down and it went ) and that wasn't a PD, if I was to set off sharply at the lights there's this massive flat spot like I say untill the turbo kicks in at 1500, must try and set off in second and see if thats OK, I did notice a similar flat spot on a test drive in a 2008 scout which had done 14,000,would it be anything to do with the haldex system ? Greg whats this mechatronic system ? thanks for the replys cheers - Stuart.

Get a re-map, it will solve all your problems.

:(But its a brand spanking new car ! I am away with the caravan next 2 weeks so I will monitor how it goes - hopefully OK. ;)

So? I reckon emissions controls have strangled the TDI and a re-map is needed to ensure it runs smoothly.
