Plug In Performance Chip

Hi, a chap from my work says he has a genuine VW performace chip which you just plug in? He woud do it for 20 pound fitted. But iv never heard of them. But he assures me its made by VW and has has one on his vw and his mate one on his VRS for nearly a year and the diffrence is quite alot?Any advice? Thanks.

If it was genuine, and was any good, for £20, everyone would have one!

A half decent plug and play chip is £400-£600.

What he has is probably a resister mod (resister probably only costs a couple of pounds from the likes of maplins). Don't know how they work or where they go exactly. But for example, you take the plug off an electrical component, and put this resister between the connections, which sends the wrong signal to the ecu and fools it into either over fueling or increacing the turbo speed etc.

Aparently its somthing to do with the engine think it needs more air or something i havnt a clue but he days it increased his buy like 10bhp and a few MPG??

Quite a few of the resistor plug in units do have a VW marking and the plugs are fine, but it is still just a resistor which over-rides the temperature monitoring system, so the car 'thinks' that it is cold winter weather and puts in more fuel. To some extent they do work and lots of people happy, but many find that they are OK with a cool engine, but once the motor is hot it sounds rough and is less flexible. Most end up in the bin after a while. They were about £20 on e-bay so this is no bargain.

Are yes, the resistor mod. Not good for your engine in the long run, and could seriously damage your engine. The so called "Chip" fiddles with the temp sensor readings causing the car to inject more fuel into the cylinders, after a short period of time the "check engine" light will come on because the ECU gets confused by the incorrect readings. The overfuelling can cause "Bore Wash" which is very bad for your engine and can lead to premature failure. The extra soot can block up your turbo charger, EGR valve, Cat converter, the list goes on.

Dont be fooled by the VW branding, sure the case has been purchased through VW, but whats inside has not. There is NO such thing as a genuine VW performance chip. Whilst you do get some gains in the short term, the cost when it all goes wrong later is way more expensive than a proper remap which relies more on boost than fuel.

This will just be a 5p resistor in a box. Don't use it.

10 bhp and then a huge engine bill along the line.Don,t do it its not worth it.
