hard to start when hot octavia 110 bhp

Featured Replies

Hi

Mine 110bhp Tdi octavia is great at starting when cold but when warm will jurn over for 30 seconds before it starts ,have looked in you forum and seen that a battery can be at fault or a temperate sensor any more up dates on this one.

Thanks Catson

IIRC 110 bhp Tdi engine fited to other VAG cars suffered from this, in many cases its due to a combination of a tired starter motor and an ECU that requires a minimum turn over speed (which I think is related to measured temperature) to permit starting. The solution was to fit a new starter motor as VAG wont do anything about the ECU software.

Can in some cases be a stuck Anti-shudder(?) valve too. This used to happen to me somtimes when I stopped for fuel on the way back from work - after about a 90 minute drive.

HI

Where is the anti- shudder valve on car any other ideas, car also studders now and again does,nt seem to have the same power as usually.

The anti-shutter valve is a vacuum controlled butterfly valve towards the top top left corner of the engine when viewed from the front. It can be seen with the engine cover on, and is operatered by a plunger on the side.

I believe that its primary purpose if to stop the engine gracefully (hense its name). I think that when the ignition is turned off, a vacuum is sent to the valve, causing the butteryfly to close and the engine to stop running (air starvation). As this is all part of the EGR assembly it can become clogged up with oil from the EGR and might stick in the closed position.

As a quick check, you can pop off the massive black pipe which ultimately leads down to the intercooler (see pic 2895).
