Remote Shutdown

Featured Replies

I have been trying to do a remote shutdown between two PC's.

I can get it to work if I do 'shutdown -i' in CMD, then do it that way. However, if I do 'shutdown -m \\media' then it doesn't work, and I get a string of errors. As a result of this I haven't been able to set it up as a command/batch file, and was wondering if any one had some ideas as to why this is, or knows of any coding that I can use.

It alo seems that I have to have a password on the target computers user account as well, is there any way around this as well?

Thanks, Joe.

Right, I have sorted the 1st bit now.

Still stuck as to the password work around.

You need to run the task as a user with rights on the other machine- a user with the same username/password should do.

So do you mean to run the shutdown commands from one PC to other? IE tell PC 1 to shutdown PC 2, then get 2 to shutdown 1?

Will that help remove the fact that it only works when I have a password enabled? Or could it be as simple as removing the passwords from both PC's?

The password issue could be because, by default, Windows XP and vista (is it vista?) only allow remote logons for accounts with passwords.

You can change this in the local security policy.

Start -> run -> secpol.msc

Then under Security Setings, Local Policies, Security Options, double click the "Accounts: Limit the local account use...." line and set to disabled.

Cheers everyone, esp. Simbo for the offer. It was running a 7 RC on the target pc, but only as nothing else (several XP's, Home sever) would install. I have now switched to a Ubuntu OS on the target PC, and shall see how this goes. Would the commands from the first machine to the target PC still be the same?

Received, but Windows in all its wisdom is convinced its going to kill me, the computer and maybe more and thus won't let me unzip or run it.:mad:

I have got a copy of PuTTY which I am fiddling with and have got working using the command you gave above, so thanks for that.

Now to get it into a batch file. . . to Google!
