Painting plastic trim

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have been looking for some black interior trim for my fabia Elegance ,it's a kind of beige colour at the moment ,up to yet with no avail.

Has anyone tried spray painting plastic trim and if so did it turn out ok.

Any feed back welcome

If you're trying to make it black, vinyl dye - not paint - is your friend.

Thanks

Where would I get the dye from? I live in Bedworth near Coventry.

Halfords. They - confusingly - call it vinyl paint, but if the small print talks about dye penetrating the plastic, then that's the one. Silver and orange aerosol, last time I looked...

Test on a small area / the reverse; your mileage may vary; etc., but I've used this stuff for years on many different plastics and it's been fine.

Your not seriously going to turn a beige elegance interior black with dye are you, the whole dash etc? Seems such a waste! I love the cream of the elegance, and won't your seats be the wrong colour? Or have I got the complete wrong end of the stick?

It's a long shot, but you should try and find someone who wants to swap before reaching for the dye.

I realy do'nt like the beige colour and the seats will be eventually retrimmed in black leather so I can keep the heated seats ,they will also be slightly remodelled bigger side bolsters ,as for the other trim it will have to go,I have seen blue and grey trim locally but not black why is that.Worse comes to the worse I will 'steal' my sons sport interior !!!!

What year is your car? Is at an original all over sandy interior or the later lighter one with more black parts? I.e. The bottom of the doors?

It's an 02 reg and the interior is all beige except the top half of the dash and carpets

great car but just feels like your sitting in a bowl of custard, the seat material is realy horrid.I'm just going to a local srapyard ,they have just got a fabia in.

you don't like the lil running men then? ;)

Does beg the question why you bought it really if you can't stand the interior this much?

How was the scrap yard trip?

I bought the car due to it being the best condition/price&service record I could find

the interior was ok but I would prefer to change it ,but keep the luxury of the heated seats,my nephew is a trimmer so thats no problem, just keeping my eyes open for the other plastic trim bits, the local scrapper only had a blue interior,if I cant find black I may plump for the blue.

The car is Black Magic metallic and looks nice on the outside and runs realy sweet.

Another vinyl paint is called "Vinlykote" A German brand and is favoured by classic car restorers. I've tried the Halfords brand previously mentioned and didn't find it clings to the original vinyl to good, one little scratch and it will start to peel. Tried a second coat after scrupiously cleaning and lightly sanding the vinyl and it sticks a bit better, how long for I don't know.
