Clunking noise in 2nd gear

Featured Replies

Took my vrs to Skoda couple of weeks back after discovering a clunking noise under the front end of the car when putting front on throttle and taking foot off,it only seeems to happen in 2nd gear. They said that the front droplinks were corroded and the front arm rear bushes were worn which was creating the clunking/knocking noise.Had them replaced today, guess what the clunking noise is still there and now actually a bit worse. It only occurs when putting foot on throttle in 2nd and quickly taking foot off. Any ideas?Im stumped gota take car back again as the idiots claimed they never heard anything in the road test.Could be possibly engine/gear box mounts??? All help would be greatly appreciated, give me an idea of what to tell the mechanic to look for.

Yes it would be worth having the gearbox mounts checked.

Also I would double check that the big 18mm bolt which clamps the wishbone between the subframe and console is as tight as it should be. Sometimes when winding the bolt back in, it can go tight in the thread before actually going tight against the subframe if you get me. This is due to crap on the thread of the console and bolt. If it's not clamping it tight enough, you'll get movement in your wishbone / trackcontrol arm and this will also cause the clunking under acceleration and braking.

Will mention that to the mechanic tomorrow,im hoping its something like that rather than a mechanical job i spent £541 on the car today.Any other ideas to what else it could be?All im thinking is the more possible options we have the more likely to track the problem down.

Sounds similar to the gearbox and/or dogbone mounts to me. I went through hell with mine, but I think mine were a little bit worse.

I had clunking through first, second and third as I dropped the clutch, dabbed the accelerator on/off or went over pot holes etc.

Theres a common fix of greasing the gearbox side engine mount with silicone grease, works for some, didn't for me. As yours isn't as bad it may be worth trying. You need to remove the battery, the battery surround and bottom plate and possibly the air box for easy access. All of which are fairly simple nuts and screws. Theres some guides on here somewhere.

In the end I had the gearbox side mount and dogbone mount replaced (about 250 at a main dealer, but would be cheaper at an indy), not heard it since!

Took the car down to the garage yesterday what i wasted journey the noise didnt happen at all on the road test. They said without locating the area of the car where its coming from they couldnt really do anyting.Sods law then when i got near to home the noise started up again, changing into 2nd gear dabbing the acceleration on and off.Not sure what to do now, whether to just leave it til it happens all the time or what??
