Oil and filter change

Featured Replies

I want to do an intermediate oil and filter change on my 08 VRS petrol.

Can someone tell me where the filter is located and say if there are any difficulties in the job.

Thanks.

Yes you can do it but kiss good-bye to your warrantee! They will easily find out when you take in next.

Would you or someone else kindly explain WHY..

...and if 'they' do find out how could that possibly invalidate the warranty since I would use a genuine VAG filter and the correct spec oil.?

Seems to me recently there have been alot of un helpful and unsubstantiated replies recently on this forum.

The question asked was about an oil and filter change, and not about warrenty.

I find this forum a really useful source of information but have found that you can ask a simple question, but get loads of pointless un helpfull comments before actually getting the answer to your question.

Thank you for some sensible comments...I hope someone now comes along who has experience of an oil and fiter change, otherwise I'll just jack up the car, remove the engine undertray and take it from there...and I'll report back if there is anything quirky about it.

I am sorry if sounded rude etc.... Use to DIY all the servicing on my last car (Honda), but that was less computer bits than my Skoda has

But if you muck around DIYing the oil VAG will disown any engine warrantee work that may be needed and try and maybe all the car warrantee. If you want the oil done go to a VAT registered place to maintain it, and even then VAG may say that oil change damaged part 'X' or not to 'standard' and 'we are not going to pay up!' Also post 3 years you are more likely to get goodwill towards big parts that may go if you use Skoda for all your servicing, just read the weekly Motoring letters in the Telegraph for this.

And from what I've read and understand too the computer will know new oils gone in. Your cars on LongLife service with say 266 days to service, now you drain and put fresh oil in. The computer says good new oil, ok 466 days now to next service. But the real spanner in the works it will recorded this fact and the next time you go to dealer he may/will know this fact. That's is taking you don't cross threaded the oil sump plug etc or muck up anything else.

Is it really worth the risks? You paid say £16k for your car is it worth messing around for the next 3 years? Move to fixed servicing and pay Skoda local outfit £140ish each year, two tanks of fual the way things are going:thumbdwn:.

You misunderstand what I am trying to achieve.I will be doing an EXTRA oil and filter change here in addition to the manufacturers schedule,it will still have a Skoda longlife service when it is two years old.I have just got the car and I don't know how it's been treated so I want to do a change now for my own piece of mind.

If Skoda get to know about this,so what? I'd like to see them win a battle over a warranty claim because they say some damage has been caused by the oil being TOO CLEAN!!!

The Honest John commments,as you may now appreciate, don't apply in these circunstances.

...So I think you're barking up the wrong tree, mate.

And I would welcome comments about the location of the filter, any special tools needed, etc.

If your concerned about the previous treatment of the car (which I understand) why not get it into the dealer for its oil change and inspection? They could then check the underside of the car, tyres, hoses etc. Otherwise, can't see any issue as I gather its mileage/2 yrs for the longlife. So, if you make sure its booked in within 2 years should be fine.

I did share the same view about doing a extra oil change and posted the same sort of questions. But then seen the light and did some reading up on Briskoda and other VW boards, along with the weekly look in the Telegraph.

And doing any form of DIY servicing (oil is classed as service) will invalidate a cars warranty if something goes wrong and they find out you have been messing around with oil changes. You MUST use a VAT reg place to do the oil change or Skoda/VW/Seat place so that your keep your warranty.

Have a look at these posts:

http://briskoda.net/octavia-ii/service-help/148719/

And if you still want to go ahead Haynes do a Manuel for the Golf MK5 now, this will save you mucking up the car! The oil filter is in cartridge and accessible from the top by the way.

Saying you cannot perform an "extra" service would be akin to when my 2.0 TFSI engine requires an oil top-up (which it does usually once a month) I'd have to go to my dealer and have them top it up as that is the only way I could guarantee the correct oil was used.

Missing dealer services and replacing them with DIY could in theory invalidate a warranty as one of the conditions of the warranty will be regular services to a particular standard etc.

But if my car gets a regular, Skoda dealership service at 15,000 & 30,000 so long as VAG parts were used I really cannot see them getting upset if I did one at 22,500.

You can bet VAG warranty department are staffed by people that are told to get out of all calms if there's anything not quote right, there view of right that is. Window broke "that's because of your DIY oil change sir". Then you take them to court over not paying up, but VAG will win saying "you must have done something else like take door pad off" and can prove you fiddle by pointing to DIY oil change. I know not right and all but this is the sad world with all live in today....

Toping up oil is listed in manual can DIY, so ok from legal point but if you over fill your on your own but again they telling this in manual and on engine cover

May I ask OPer why he doesn't not want to let the dealer do oil fixed change? Is it cost or trust? If the 1st I guess you would be only saving a few pound (£40?) by the time you buy long-life oil, filter and sump plug etc. Maybe the likes of NationWide AutoCentres would be doing a offer just to do the oil for you if you really don't want to go near Skoda? they really don't bite!

James.

Yep even if the service is extra it could still invalidate your warranty.

Any servicing during the warranty period must be carried out by a VAT registered garage, use EU produced parts and carry out all work to Skodas guidelines.

Interim service isnt really needed, and on variable servicing will **** it all up.

I'm sorry but I originally asked a simple question and I wished I'd not bothered,I've not received any proper info but instead have been patronised by people who seem mostly to either work for Skoda or are taken in by their propaganda.

I will carry out the oil and filter change anyway ,thank you,I don't think I will mess it up since I've been doing work of a similar nature for over forty years.

As I've already said,if Skoda think they can void their engine warranty because the car has the correct clean oil and filter installed (but not by them) then I'll see them in Court,I do know professionally a little about the law of contract.

.

At the end of the day I trust myself more than franchised dealers...have you ever considered that the top price synthetic oil that you are paying Skoda for may be ending up in the grease monkey's old banger while your sump is filled with Quik Fit cheapo grade?

I had simply thought that my original question would be answered in one line,i.e......

'See link to Octavia II how to do oil and filter change'...sadly not:confused:.

So why ask the question in the first place with all your experiance ? :rotz:

Well maybe we should'nt have bothered taking the time to reply to your post. Coming on here with an attitude won't get you much help. You've had plenty of info and points of view from other Briskodadians which you asked for and you seemed to have already decided on what you wanted to do with your superior knowledge. I think your the one that's patronising. :thumbdwn:

Lummox's very valid point is that if your car's on variable serviceing you will indeed louse it up because the sump has an oil quality sensor to create part of the data that decides when your next variable service is due. Changing the oil will confuse it.

All I can say is

"It's your warranty"

If you lose it and then have a major failure, please remember to pop by and tell us so we can go "haw haw. Told you so"

My dealer knew I did a change at 5,000 and sent it to them for the service at 10,000.

Didn't have a problem with it!

Ok perhaps *JP* could do a how to guide when he's do it and post?

The Octavia is too new and some people I guess from 2004 have taken out extended warrantees which will forbid any DIY mucking around like factory warrantee.

One last thing on this would you be happy to buy a car for say £12k from some one that has fiddled around will oil changes. I do take your point about trust, had some bad time with a local mazda dealer a few years back (not doing oil and brake fluid change but changed for!). But the Skoda ones seem a lot better, but just ask to watch them do the work and give them the right oil. No place will refuse you to let them watch the work been done if got nothing to hide.

It's obvious,so at my age I don't have to go to the same physical effort twice...remove the undertray,is it a hexagon for the sump plug ,an allen key or a torx key, have I got the one required?....the filter ...accessability? tool needed?

This sort of info is easily available on other forums so the job can be tackled in one go..but not here apparently.

All I wanted was an answer to my question for which I would have been grateful but mainly all I got was ''oh no you can't be doing that''.

And yes I did know bbeforehand that what I will be doing will not invalidate the warranty but I didn't ask that queston did I?
