North Yorks - Best roads?

Featured Replies

Hi all!

First of all, please, no kitten pics, I did search (scout's honour!)

i'm off to Yorkshire on thursday for a long weekend, and being a commited vRS owner, I intend to find some interesting and twisty roads for me to scare myself (slighty!) on.

I will be staying near Settle, and I have a passing familiarity with some of the roads such as the roads running around Inglebrough, but am looking for suggestions from your good selves as to other possiblities. I am already intending to venture over Buttertubs (good test for the new 312's!) but other suggestions gratefully welcomed!

and keep your eyes peeled for me too!

Another vote for the A684 around Hawes from me!

Ta folks, just the ideas i was looking for!

I think my route is developing

Settle-Ingleton-Ribblehead-Buttertubs-Kirkby Stephen-Sedburgh or Garsdale Head-A684-Leyburn-A6108 North-then a couple of country roas back across the moor towards Malham, and then home.

A good start eh?

But I need more suggestions......anywhere in Lake District that I really shouldnt miss out on?

Andy - That MPG is certainly a target now....!

I think you'd be better heading further west to the Lake District, home of truely awesome roads.

That's one of the things I'd love to do one of these days in summer. Drive either down TeesDale to Cow Green Reservoir as I never been (I've only been up to High & Low Force) or drive down to Hawes via the Buttertubs Pass.

There are still lovely roads on the North York Moors. I love the B1257, Stokesley to Helmsley Road, it's been renamed by bikers as the Yorkshire TT.

Ok, any suggestions for me?

Also any places to go?

Thanks for all the suggestions, keep'em coming, 12 hours til I leave!

I'd also recommend the Buttertubs pass; one of my favourite roads :)

I don't know the name of it now but the road that takes you past the Ribblehead Viaduct is also a good one.

Yep Kirkstone Pass is superb. Also if you time get on the a69 towards carlisle from Newcastle and turn off at hayden bridge for alston, will take you through to Penrith. Great road, then you could head for kirkstone pass along the a 592. Then head towards kendal and back over Yorkshire. Will take a while but sure you would enjoy it.

Bit too far east for you perhaps, but we've just got back from a holiday near Pickering, and the road between there and Whitby is pretty cool (A169?) past RAF Fylingdales

For a longer journey with even more twists n turns, take a right at Ribblehead & follow the road through Hawes to Aysgarth & on through Buckden & Kilnsey, stop off for lunch in Skipton (Pork pie shop!!!) then back up the A65 to Settle!!

Watch out for bikers...

That was to be my suggestion.

Anyway - The A628 From Long Preston (near Settle) via Gisburn to Barrowford (where I live) is a good road. But can get clogged with HGVs. This is one of the top 10 most dangerous roads in Britain. Mainly due to the bikers who seem intent on trying to kill themselves each weekend over the summer.

At Barrowford you can turn to Barnoldswick and then onto Skipton.

Cheers captain, that looks like a good route....added!

Thanks to you all for your suggestions, I now have a coule of good routes to try, so keep your eyes peeled, and maybe I'll see some of you out there!

Yeah one of my favourites too, also some good side roads too. Even better in the winter:)

This was from my car earlier in the year, heading from Penrith towards Alston, stops at the Hartside Cafe.

Hey folks,

well i'm back, and both the car and myself are in one piece! 1500 miles in 5 days - love it!

I tried out several of the roads mentioned above, although i did not venture to the NE, and my trip to the lakes was curtailed by a nose-to-bumper tail on the A66....

however, the main aim was accomplished - the famous Buttertubs Pass!

Now that is what I call a road!

Hairpins, blind summits and apexs, sheep, sheer drops and stunning scenery. I admit I had to take several trips along this beautiful piece of this tarmac, once as a sighter, one (or two!) runs in anger, then a scenery and photography run. So I thought I would share some of my photos

Sorry only just seen this thread.

Buttertubs is a favourite of mine, also not to far from the highest pub, used in the Everest double glazing ad.

Did you stop a the Wenslydale Cheese factory in Hawes?

  • Author

heh, no, everytime I passed through Hawes all of the parking spaces were filled with motorcyclists....

They were mental! Blind bends or apexes, nothing seemed to scare them!

On a side note, I saw the famed "non-stock" Impreza police car...he had pulled over a Harley-type cruiser (rider in t-shirt and jeans). Although possibly speeding, I can't help thinking he was probably less of threat than the full leather, racing-tuned biker types!

nice pics PL look like great drivin roads
