i was unsure about taking the plunge so the wife did it for me

Featured Replies

after getting rid of my beloved fabia vrs in may and replacing it with a cheap runabout its come the time where i needed something new, the rover is a great car dont get me wrong but theres something wrong about a 23 year old lad such as myself driving an old rover 400, also the missus is a bit snobby where cars are concerned, she wouldnt even say the sentance "we have a skoda" to people when i had the fabia:rofl:

so after much debate into what car i would like next, the answer was a mondeo ST220, after weeks of looking i could never find the right one so it was between a vectra 3.2 gsi and a subaru impreza turbo, went to see a GSi on sunday and she fell in love with it, as did myself if im honest, not wanting to jump the gun and it was the first car id seen i was all up for leaving it till i saw a few other cars, before i know it my darling wife has only gone and bought it for me!!! "thats your anniversary and xmas sorted" im told, fine by me!

pick it up next wednesday, cant wait!!

LOL yeah never looked at it that way, i suppose in her world and her mates' a vauxhalls more acceptable than a skoda

Impreza  or Vectra :thumbdwn:  no comparison..... completely different cars...

Would take the Impreza every time, but as I really like the Skoda's the only way to go would be an Octavia vRS PD170 TDI for me :D

Just my opinion................

I hope the OP likes understeer.

vectra insurance 640

subaru 1300, plus theres finding a subaru that hasnt been ragged to buggery, and standard equipment in subarus are abit pants, its not just about the performance of what it can do, of course a subaru is better in performance but im looking at the car as a whole, vauxhalls arent exactly the greatest name in cars but ive had 2 both faultless, had 2 company vauxhalls that too were faultless

The understeer of a Vectra is in an entirely different league!

Believe me, you won't need to drive wildly. :rotz:

they really that bad? cant say when i test drove it i noticed it, could be worse though, could be stuck with this rover:)

heh.. there is a reason GM/Vauxhall are almost bankrupt!! Strange how some people think aint it, vauxhall would be one of the very last manufacturers i would ever consider buying a car from.

Hope its ok for you! :P

I wouldn't take it all personally, you cant really come to a Skoda forum and tell us you have bought a Vauxhall and get away with it lightly

I think the Rover might be the better choice!

well to be honest i like the car and i think it drives fine, plus its a present so im hardly going to be negative about it, if i had the money of course i would go and buy the likes of bmw's mercs etc, id sooner drive around in an understeering vauxhall than be like alot of people i know that get into ridiculous amounts of debt to just be able to say, yeah ive got this car, havent been on holiday, or got my own home coz the car costs me more than half my monthly wage but look at my lovely car.

Quite right too. It's far more sensible to buy a car you like within budget than go into huge amounts of debt.

Hope it serves you well.

Well, I'd rather the Rover than a V*ctr@ anyway, but a Skoda Octavia is a better car than the V@*xh@11 (based on driving both over same 70 miles m/way, s/c and town test route). I can't really coment on the Rover except that it's a very old design by now.

trust me you wouldnt, everybodys tastes are different, i had an 06 octavia, seats were worse than uncomfortable, some people could find they are comfortable, all down to tastes and needs

far too many people seem to think they need to agree with the common opinion, whats that, jeremy clarkson said vectras are shít??? well i hate them too

cant anyone get their own opinion or reserve their opinions until they actually know what they are talking about, if you have driven the gsi vectra fair enough, but if not dont just nod along, get your own opinion, i was told fab vrs' were cráp and not to get one, i tried it and it was to my wants and needs. i remember not so long back it was the same about fiats, people opening their mouths without ever even owning a fiat:confused: how can you comment on the reliability, performance and worst of all the attitude of dealerships if youve never even dealt with them?

Personally I think the Vecta makes good sense as a used car buy. Cheap as chips to buy, pretty reliable and solid too. You will adore V6 lushness I'm sure

Seats contarywise - the Octy is supportive but comfortable, where the V*ctr@ appears to use cast concrete and gives me numb bum after an hour or so. The V*ctr@ also had the most anaethsatised steering I've ever had the displeasure to encounter, including a range of V@*xh@11s and several Japanese cars.

As I said, my opinion was based on driving both cars over a test route that needs about 90 minutes to complete. You've been on here long enough to know that I think Clarkson was an iconoclast, and has turned into a loud-mouthed idiot.

what im saying is the particular model, i had a 2.2DTi once as a company car, was great, had to borrow a 2.0DTi and it was awful, as with the octavia, seats were cráp but i know the seats in the VRS are great. seems the whole understeering issue is what they bleated on about most on top gear and seems whats gettin uttered here aswell, the other vectras i had never suffered from understeer, so vectras as a whole dont suffer from understeer throughout the range

I've had the use of a last model Vectra SRI 150 diesel for a day as a hire car. And I can truthfully say its the most understeering car I've ever driven. (and i drive an Audi which is supposed to be bad )

No bandwagon jumping here.

Exactly, and my other related point is that I only found out about the understeer because I could see the front washing wide. Even strong understeer isn't so bad if you can at least feel it!

Yeah, in the ones I've driven it just happens without you knowing about it! That's the bad thing!
