Wiring in tom tom charger.

Featured Replies

How feasable is it to hard wire my tom-tom charger somewhere in the dash of my car?

I'm not fussed if it is next to the driver a-piller which i know is straight above the fuse panel does this make it easy?

Or is it possible to pop it up the back of the dash in the middle (above radio)? is there something to wire it into?

Or possibly just add a cigarette lighter socket in the cubby hole in the dash?

I hate the wire trailing from the centre console up to the wind screen.

Does anyone know if I just chop the end of the charger off and use the wires or will i need some kind of built in transformer from the cigarette lighter plug?

Thanks

Scott

I did it in the roomster by cheating. The TomTom charger is fused so I cheated.

I bought a 2 ciggy socket thing with a USB output, then chopped the end off that and ran it to an ignition switched live on the fuse box (fitting an inline fuse to it of course)

This was then mounted to the floor under the heater behind the centre console. What I then did was plug the tomtom charger into that and a USB cable to charge the iPhone. I ran the small "end" of the tomtom charger up the heater duct to an active tomtom mount and plugged it in.

Sounds like a big job but took around 40 minutes, and now I am selling the TomTom I have an unmolested charger.

There were some pics in the Roomster section

Yep, I'd do what Tony suggests. In fact that's another little job I need to do, as I took this out of the Fabia.

Multi cig adaptor, wired to the fusebox, then plug the TT charger into there. You don't have to hack that then. Mine was wrapped with some bubblewrap round the edges to prevent noise/vibration, then popped down by the steering column in the Fabia. Not sure where I'll locate it on the Octy.

I've wired mine straight in to the fuse box.

Find an empty slot that has power to it, get a 5 amp fuse, wrap the bare end of positive the wire round one terminal and put the fuse in. For the negative wire I have simply loosened one of the bolts located near the fuse box, wrapped the bare wire round it and retightened. You can then run the wire wherever you want it.

.....or how about getting an inline adaptor ( a female cigarette power socket) to enable the tomtom to be plugged into that. You would then be able to attach the free ends of it to a hidden 12v feed and have only the correct end for whichever tomtom you have showing. A much neater solution

Be aware that your TomTom needs 5V and you need to have a 12V to 5V trafo (it is in the plug), otherwise you blow your device up.

thanks for that, i did wonder if it would be safe to juse wire intoo fuse box without transformer

I bought a cig lighter from an accesory shop, wired into an ignition on only live from fusebox taped the cig lighter plug into the new socket to make sure it did not come out or rattle and then ran the TT lead up the side of the dash under the door seal under the A pillar cover and out of the front of the A pillar cover.- works for me!
