RS TDI with DSG query

Featured Replies

Hi All,

My 08 Octavia RS TDI is my first foray into TDI engines. I was wondering how a few thing will affect the TDI engine.

I'm looking to get the crank, fly wheel etc balanced... BUT I have the DGS gearbox.

Has anyone had any experience with balancing the twin plate clutch and dual mass fly wheel in the DGS box? The fly wheel looks pretty standard to balance but I'm a little skeptical about getting the "Scooter" (as my wife has nicknamed it  ) back after having it balanced and the box is screwed.

Intakes and exhaust. So far with my prodigious online searching skills (<Supersprint that are direct replacement for OEM parts... And a K&N pod filter kit. Has anyone got any other posibilities in this area? More choices the better imo and the a local place quoted $850 just to purchase the K&N kit... :Yikes:

Brakes: they are ok... but I want better bite when braking hard from +100km/h. Anyone have any suggestions here. I'm thinking just a set of slotted rotors and some new pads should do the trick, but a full caliper upgrade is not totally out of the question.

Tyres and wheels: I need more rubber to get the torque on the ground and wider tyres is the easiest obvious choice. Anyone used hub spacers at all? I'm thinking of going 10mm all round and going up to a 235 tyre. Just wondering if anyone's tried it at all.

What I'm trying to do here is get a little bit more power out of the car but mostly just free it up to run really well. I plan on keeping the car till it dies so I'm going for mods that will not sacrafice longevity.

I've searched the forums here but haven't got back any good info.

Thanks.

If I were going to keep a car until it dies, I would have avoided the DSG box at all costs. If this goes wrong outside of warranty, the cost to fix it will run into 000's of pounds unlike a bullet proof manual which can easily be sorted. You will have the same issue with the DPF fitted in the exhaust, which costs hundreds to replace when it goes, and it will frequently if you are a town driver. For a keeper till death I would have gone for a petrol manual. In the UK its possible to get a remap which includes a new downpipe, that maps out the DPF so it can be removed from the exhaust, but the all in cost of that is just under £1K.

For exhausts Miltek and Blueflame are quiet popular. I dont know what the width of the standard wheels are, but on my 18x8" alloys I am running 235 wide tyres without any problems.

If you're just after a bit of power, why balance the flywheel/crank etc? Just get it remapped.
