fuel gauge is going from full to empty and up and down in minutes. any ideas?

Featured Replies

Today when i left home to drive 15 miles i had half a tank left. After about 2 miles the fuel light came on and the fuel gauge went below red. I had a quick panic but then thought i had half a tank a mintue ago, so whats going on? It went up and down all day sayin it was empty then half full. Left it until tonight and went back to the car to see its fine now! Its done it 3 times in 2 years? Any ideas or theories? Thanks

Lift back seat and you will find a large plastic cover above the fuel tank. Fuel sender connections will need cleaning. Common on the 6N Polo.

Oh right, I thought it might of been an electrical fault. When you say clean the connections, how do I do this? Is it just a quick wipe and its all done!?

Yes there are a couple of spade connectors under the plastic cover that connect to the fuel level sender on top of the tank. Might only be one, can't remember to be honest, as it's about 5 years since I fixed that particular fault on a Polo. Just pull the connector off, clean the terminal with WD40, wipe with vaseline or electrical grease, and refit.
