Mk I Vs Mk II

Featured Replies

So, whats the general opinion on here of a Octy Mk I vRS against the Mk II vRS....?

I only ask as i've owned both myself, but in the order you wouldn't expect. I had the Mk II first. And chopped it in for my Mk I.....

IMO its a much better car if you can turn a blind eye to cabin quality.

Well according to the stats in 'Evo' the Mk1 and Mk2 have the same power to weight ratio so would be fairly similar performance wise. Never driven a MK2 myself so cannot say.

Cabin-wise the MK2 is better but I think I prefer the Mk1 for some strange reason styling wise, not the quality though.

Overall I would take a mk2 as they are improved but the Mk1 is still the original that defined what an actual RS Skoda is and perhaps a future classic?

Hmmm

Power, Chassis, Tuneability on standard engine ( i know you can get 600bhp from a MK1 but its basically a new engine :D) are all better on the MK2 over the MK1. That's my opinion anyway having owned both (but my MK1 was a 2.0GLXi so not to sure about MK1 vRS although i have driven one)

The MK2 seems a little fuel hungrier... by about +1.5l/100km.

I wouldn't call 42mpg on a TFSi fuel hungry ;)

Carl:thumbup:

Oh noes! Another kitteh dead!

Both have their pros and cons. I'd prefer the Mk2 cause it's more comfy and has more toys.

Carl:thumbup:

If you get that on the TFSi I'll eat my hat...which is even more amazing considering I don't have a hat

Erm i quite regularly get it.

Sat at NSL on Motorway. Quite easy to do.

Oh i am Stage 2+ mapped though so that may help ;)

The Mk2 doesn't deserve RS status, as there was never a Mk2 Octavia-based works rally team.

The Mk1 & 2 Fabia and Mk1 Octavia have all earned the right to wear a 'Ralley Sportu' badge.

The Mk2 should have a different name for the sporty model, reflecting its use for circuit racing.

Also I own a Mk1, so it's better!

mk 2 has better seats...

Am I allowed to say "********"?

Edit: .......... clearly not, how about "******"? :P

As a happy owner of Mk1 I have to say that Mk2 is better :D Especially nice is ECU and all the nice things you can do with VAG COM and OBD2 port.

I keep catching sight of a lovely blue Mark II vRS round our way and I always think, "Hmmm… that's beautiful". Then I see other Mark IIs, and from certain angles, I just don't think the lines flow as smoothly as the Mark I.

I might be biased but standard Mark IIs just look… well … boring, IMO :o

Haven't driven a Mark II though so can't comment on the all-important ride aspect

There will be no hat eating today, but I've a question (sorry didn't read the whole other thread). Did you actually check using the old fashioned brim-to-brim method or are you claiming based on the computer? I mean, I drive a mk2 vrs from time to time and the best I ever got was 30mpg and this was with a feather-light foot, alone in the car, no luggage, no ac, on motorways. Stock engine, not mapped.

The trip computer has been accurised using VCDS by doing a Brim-to-Brim check and then altering the fuel calculation percentage.

See here: Fuel Computer Calibration

By doing it again recently i found it was pretty much bob on accurate

You really should be getting around 33-35mpg on a standard Mk2 vRS TFSi on a Motorway.

Not on the motorways I went on when out with Chris you don't!

If Skoda had of made a Mk1 with the 225hp engine and 4wd drive than I'd say the Mk1. But they didn't. So 50/50 for me

But on track I'd have a Mk1 anyday for the simple fact that its lighter and I reckon more nimble for traction transfer and better braking! The turn in on a Mk1 is way better after fitting a big Rear Arb.

Mk1's are cheaper to.

And I own one.

Thats because you and Chris have the optional Lead Right Foot insert pack :D

The mk one looks more aggressive, the mk two is more buisness class. I prefer the mk1 as its a little rough round the edges overall.

Although I wouldn't rule out a mk two in the future, but it would need too grow on me alot first lol.

Tis true, but of course your motorway MPG is based on your cruising speed. On my way to work, very early in the morning when I can travel at 'my own speed' I usually return 31-34mpg over 101 miles. On my way back home, when i'm stuck traveling at 'traffic speeds' I get 37-42mpg, and even then all slip roads, round-a-bout exits etc would still have been full gas acceleration, but the lower cruising speed makes the difference.

On one occasion I did an experiment and didn't really go above 65 all the way, and returned nearly 50mpg....

So claiming 35mpg from a 2.0L engine, turbo'd or otherwise, is perfectly plausible.

I've just moved from the Mk1 vrs up to the Mk2 vrs. I have to say iam impressed, even in standard form it's very nippy. I think it is a better car than the Mk1 and i do get lots more looks than i ever did in the Mk1. Mpg is quite good, I got 360 miles out of the last tank before the light came on and i get 36 mpg on a motorway (trip computer). I'm still working out everyday A road driving but it's looking good.

Bring on the Remap :D

Having driven both, the Mk1 gives more kick when the turbo come in.

I found the Mk2 lacking in comparison.

But the Mk2 is so much faster ;)

But to me it was just to dull to warrant the extra for less spec. So instead I stuck with the Elegance trim on the Mk2 which had more toys as standard, and was cheaper.

Had it had the turbo kick and fun factor of the Mk1, then thinks might have been different....

I miss my 1.8T Elegance dearly :(
