Watch out with remaps (especially if your not aware of them)

I've always wondered why my PD105 has smoked like so in the video.

Octavia Mk2 :: Skoda19TDISmokey.flv video by Browny_37 - Photobucket

Once i confirmed it had been mapped i took it down to Ben to work his magic on mapping it back to stock.

Now i've had it in bits this weekend due to a inlet leak, and come across the blades looking a little tired on a 9k old turbo.

Can anyone from this rather poor picture tell me if this looks normal?

I've to have it all in bits again at a later date, so i will get the Digtal SLR in and get a better picture.

I'm no expert but that looks like some foreign object has passed through the turbo, perhaps the previous owner ran a cheap aftermarket air filter that didn't do much filtering?

Sorry, i forgot to mention im the only owner of this turbo.

As my old one snapped off at christmas on the compressor side and got lodged in the catalytic.

Me thinks whatever was in there left some shrapnell, which wasn't cleaned out at those edges look a wee bit knackered.

Hmmm, this is worrying.....as this is on the inlet from the MAF and airbox :S

As everything is fastened up and sealed.

Its looking more like selling up and moving back to vauxhall by the coming weeks.

That's pretty bad, but I'd have thought something significant and none soft has to have hit that.

You need to speak to the place that put the turbo on mate.

Hmmm, thats the garage it come back worse from matey.

Im totally fed up of this heap of horse manure!

Im getting stick for it left right and centre at the moment!

What im more worried about now, is what internal damage is there to the engine?

Get it down to Ben at AV Performance then. He'll get it sorted out.

At what cost though, the turbo is still in warrenty :S

I dont really fancy going back to the garage, as the car come back worse than last time when it went in for the leaking inlet (lack of thread left in the head) . I'll probably let the car go if im going to have to pay for another turbo. Cant be arsed with it anymore.

Sorry to read this hope you can get it sorted

It does indeed look like something has hit those compressor blades. However, you're right, there's no telling what damage the particle has done after passing through the turbo and into the engine.....

Is that some oil sitting on the botom of the compressor inlet? If it is, it certainly shouldn't be there.

I hope you get it sorted quickly.

Whatever the object was, after its been through the turbo it has the narrow fins of the intercooler to go through next. Whatever it was is most likely harmlessly wedged in there.

I dont see any point in selling though, just because of this. If the turbo is still working fine with some damage on the fins, carry on driving it as it could have been like it for a long time already. If you sell, who know what you will get next that could be a money pit. The Octy whilst costing money now, will be far less than the money you will lose should you decide to sell.

Isn't that damage to the fins going to mean it's slightly unbalanced now and hence certainly going to wear out quicker?

While I agree that Browny shouldn't sell the car, a couple of people seem to have missed that this turbo was only put on the car around Christmas time - it is only 9 months old.

Whats particulaly confusing me, is that the engine hasn't been touched since christmas or 9k ago. Its still got the airfilter in that the garage fitted at the same time as the turbo.

I've simply left it as it is and got on with the rest of the car.

Im tending to think along the same lines of wega, with how it will effect the balance of the turbo,

The oil in the inlet housing, i suspect would be down to vapours being directed from the rocker cover into the inlet plenum, just upstream from the turbo.

Its costing me a small fortune, i've got a creaking dash. Along with a rear door that keeps making a cracking glass noise as i go over harsh bumps.

Generally sounds like a can of marbles driving it around, creaking and groaning all the time.

I've previously had a Mk4 Astra Coupe Turbo, was a nice car although it didn't like NGK R plugs from Vauxhall. The only main problem i had with that was that integral dumpvalve in the turbo split.

I think it will be a Vauxhall Astra Coupe 1.8 16v Linea Rossa Edition me thinks!

Not being rude mate but a 130k mile Vauxhall is going to be much worse in general.

If it's under skoda warranty then take the car to a main dealer as it's a skoda warranty not that dealer.

Who said anything about an 130k vauxhall?

Although my previous car was a 150k Vauxhall Omega, i never had that much trouble with it. The stem seals weaped a lil when it was stood. But apart from two worn out lambda sensors and a leaky rocker cover it was excellent to drive.

Its not under any sort of warrenty for a main agent, just a independant skoda specialist.

What I'm trying to say is give the Octavia a fair game

Are you going to sponsor it then? hahaha

Seriously though, i've put a couple of thou into it now inc the seats/springs/wheels.

Damn, even the parts department at bickerton know my name and reg off by heart now!
