After better tyres

Featured Replies

Hi, i currently have Bridgestone turanza er300 (i think..or it was er30)tyres on my vrs..size 205/45/16. They are ok but after 12k miles are showing 3mm of thread left. I want to make an informed choice on my next set.

I did find when it snowed heavily a few months ago was really struggling with grip. In the wet its ok.

Anyone know of a quiet, grippier and durable tyre which you consider than the bridgestones?

I find Michelin Pilot Exaltos to be much better than the original Continental Sport Contact 2 both in terms of wet weather grip and road noise.

The Exaltos are expensive to buy at about £100 each, however, they wear very well. My current set of 4 have done over 30k and will probably last between 35 and 40k before changing.

What about a set of toyo Proxo T1R's, I've got them on the back of the fabia and not had a problem with them at all.

I went for Uniroyal Rainsport 2 's all the way round. they are great in both dry and wet...dont know about snow yet!

Put some on the front and see how long they last! Not very is the answer. Great tyres for grip, they have seen the performance in my siggy, however im lucky to get 5,000 miles out of them

Ah ok, I'm thinking of swapping from front to rear in the next few months anyhow, most of my driving is just mainly town driving at the moment.

Falken 912's. Mine have done 10000 so far, still going strong. Grip is good in all weathers, and they're sub £60 a corner!

I'm running KLEBER HYDRAXER at the moment. Great grip at wet and dry even in the scary Greek roads:D. They do perform great in the winter and in the summer where temperatures here go up to 45 celcius. It would be a good choice I think.

FWIW I got 14K from a pair or T1R's on the front of a Fabia vRS.

If you do a search, you should find that this is one of the most asked questions for the vRS. I'm sure someone like Decon will accuse you of doing something without searching. :(

The two most popular choices of tyre are the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 and the Toyo Proxes T1-R. I have both of them and can't fault them in the wet or dry. The Toyos were cheaper but I have heard they don't last long. The Goodyears we horrible in that last snow, I had wheel spin at 40-45mph in top about 1500 rpm!! I got the Toyos afterwards so can't comment.

Mine came with Bridgestones, They lasted 14.5k thats with a rotation mid way, Replaced with Toyo's.

And i can't fault them, 9k so far and with about 4mm left on the front. Backs still look like new.

Search the forum, there's loads of threads on this.

But for what it's worth I've had:

Michelins (as supplied with the car) - very hard wearing but not grippy

Rainsports - Very good in wet and dry

T1Rs - Very grippy in both wet and dry I managed 10K from the fronts

well mine came with Goodyear Eagle NCT 5's on the rear and Firehawk's on the front when i bought it in November but no idea how long they'd been on but they covered about 15k with a front/back swap in the middle.

Have just replaced with Kuhmo KU31's all round - had them on my previous Ibiza PD130 and they last ages and seemed good in dry and amazing in the wet.

Can't really comment on flat out driving grip levels as it's a rarity on road (save it up for on track you see!)

Had 3 sets of tyres on my car since I bought it:

Michelin Pilots with 2mm of tread - Noisy and poor grip.

Toyo T1R £60 a tyre - Good tyre, good grip, not noisy BUT only lasted 8k on the front.

Sumo Firenza ST-08 £49 a tyre - Noiser than the Toyos, good grip in the dry, below average grip in the wet, but acceptable as long as you don't push it.

Skint at the minute so going for some cheap *** ones next, Infinity INF-05 or something, £168 for 4 fitted.

Thats some good new's as i've just replaced my rock hard pair of firestones on the front with some Kuhmo KU31's and although they are still "breaking in" the grip is great:thumbup: and @ £158 all in including wheel alighnment on the front Not too bad i thought

I guess when you look at te ratio of how often I take mine for a normal drive, they last rather long!

I destroyed the tyre walls on a set at the front over 200 miles of track day at cadwell once, nothing to do with the tyre so much then, just got bored so kept on throwing it into corners on full lock and just understeering/wheel spinning everywhere... :D

They are good tyres, and if you get them in 215/40/16 profile they are cheaper too
