MFD2 AV input?

Featured Replies

I have an 07 Octvia vRS with the factory fitted MFD2 Sat nav installed and CD changer in the boot.

It has the 3.5mm jack in the jumbo box for plugging into my iPod and works fine when I select the (A) input in the Aux menu.

There is also and (AV) option in the aux menu, and I was wonvering if it is possible to display pictures aswell as sound through the unit, and if so, what is required to do this, and what quality the screen can display.

Has anyone done this, and can offer any advice.

I'v been having a look on other VW fourums, and it sounds like this is possible, but I could do with finding out details of the leads I need.

there is a socket for AV input on the back of the unit, the pinouts of which will be on the sticker attached to the unit. You can find a copy in my MFD2 install guide.

It will use this type of interface -

AV MULTIMEDIA INTERFACE MFD2/RNS2 VW SEAT SKODA 0002 on eBay (end time 25-Aug-09 16:27:09 BST)

You might find this socket already populated for the Aux In, I don't think it's entirely necessary and it can be moved to the same position as found on a Stream. Not sure why Skoda did it this way but I have seen it.

Thanks for your reply.

Has anyone on here got any experience of doing this, and what sort of resolution/quality of image can the display on the MFD2 display? is it good enough for photos/videos?

Finally I am not sure what you mean about the Aux socket being populated and which plug can be moved into a different position. I do not have the stream, and I did not fit the MFD2 so dont know about the pin outs.

I have however fitted a bluetooth kit and connected it to the radio using your very useful guide.

I have seen a couple of factory MFD2 installs which utilised the audio pins on the Aux socket to provide the Aux in. If you look at the diagrams the Aux in can actually be used in the green plug you have your BT connected to.

What I'm trying to say is that if you bought one of these adaptors and you already have your Aux In connected to it you'd need to move it.

Im struggling to remember what the connections are on the back of the radio, and If I go for one of these leads I'd like to do it all in one go. When I say I have installed a blutooth kit, It is an aftermarket Nokia one, not the VAG one. So am only using the Telephone mute and speaker connections (cant remember what colour plug)

I'm assuming the video lead plugs into the connector at the bottom of the attached pin out diagram labled Video?

Does this plug on the unit from ebay use all 18 of these pins? or is it split into 3 sections?

Also for a factory install, are any of these 18 pins likely to already have connections.

Until you pull out the unit and check you won't know.

If you buy an interface it'll be audio and video and hence would require the pins that might be occupied if they've (Skoda) used the Aux AV plug for your 3.5mm Aux In.

The phone you used matters not, the OEM one only uses the same L/R audio connections as your Nokia will.

Looks like I need to pull the radio out, and have a look what I got.

If the existing 3.5mm jack is connected into the aux on the AV plug, where would I need to move the connections to? and would I need additional plugs?

Also if I did this, would the 3.5mm jack still work with my ipod when I selected (A) on the aux option?

You'd need to connect it to the Aux connections on the green plug where your phone is.

As Stu says it was possible to buy a connector that plugs into the black socket on a MFD2 that will do sound and/or video with the correct one. As you are selecting A on your headunit it sounds as if Skoda have used that socket already.

I had a MFD2 with aux-in this way. I bought the cable from SatNav Systems. In fairness the MFD2 has now been upstaged by the Columbus/RNS 510/MFD3 but you should be able to find the cable on ebay with a bit of luck.

As Stu says you will need to move the wires from the black socket to the pins in the green plug where you BT sits.

I'm assuming from the pin out diagram, the Green plug with the pnone connections is the top left plug, however I can not see from the conection diagram any pins labled as Aux, which connections would they need to go into?

The info you need including diagrams is on the MFD2 install guide.

If you wish to retain the function of the Aux In Socket you can amend the wiring as follows - Thanks to RossM for the info.

You'll need to purchase a connector -

12 Pin Green Flat Contact Housing (Plug) Radio/Telephone Connection - 3B7 035 447 B - £3.38

Insert them into the new Green connector in the following positions -

Yellow - Pin 1 - EA-R

Green - Pin 7 - EA-L

Brown - Pin 2 - EA-G

You should now have Aux Audio from your MFD2. You may need to check the setup menu to ensure it is enabled.

Thanks for all your help on this. may try removing the radio at the weekend and checking and if necessary moving the cables into the alternative position on the green plug and getting this sorted, and then try and get a cable on order.

I'm still interested to know if anyone on here has done this Mod, and what sort of picture quality is possible through the screen on the MFD2

I'v been looking at some of the video clips on YouTube of the MFD2 playing videos and quality looks good so I'm probably going to give it a go.

I'd still like to hear from someone on here who has actually got one of these installed and working

I have now bought myself one of these units, and tried it today without success.

I removed the existing video plug from the back of the head unit, plugged in the lead for the video unit, and connected a switched +12v and a ground.

When I select AV in the Aux menu with a AV source connected to the unit, all I get is a black screen. The MFD2 seems to be detecting some sort of input, becasue before connecting the AV interface, when selecting AV in the Aux menu, nothing happened but now the screen goes black?

Any suggestions?

Also when I removed the existing video plug from the back of the MFD2, I noticed it had 5 wired going into the plug, does anyone know what these would go to, and what wouldnt work if I left this plug disconnected. I expect that some of these will go to the 3.5mm Aux socket in the jumbo box, but would only have expected 3 wires, +Left, + Right, and Grd, and suggestions what the other wires were for?

Look at the pin assignments and compare it to the label on the unit so what was connected.

Thought you might say that.

Was hoping somebody might know, to save me having to dig deeper.

I'll take a look and report back

I believe composite video won't work, just in case.

I thought it was RBG only from researching around

Would that explain the black screen I got? cant remember what signal I had used, cus at the time, the only AV signal I could find was my digital camrea with an AV lead. My plans once I get the unit working is to use the videos off my iPod, but at the moment, I'm still waiting for delivery of the iPod AV lead.

This is a continuation of a thread I started a number of months ago, while trying to sort out a video feed into my MFD2. I have not got the video interface module fitted and working on the MFD2, but in doing so, I had to disconnect the existing video plug, which was used for the inbuilt iPod (3.5mm audio jack) in the jumbo box.

I'v seen from some of Stus earlier help that I can move the connections to the green plug with the telephone connection on it, and Have found his post showing which 3 pins to use, and I am planning to order the connections next week.

I am now just wanting to ginfirm which of the 3 connections on the video plug that I have disconnected has the 3 cables I need to move, as the plug has 5 wired going into it. the attached pin out diagram shows what I believe will be the cables, but would like someone to confirm it, before I start cutting cables out of the existing loom to move. Also does anyone know what the other 2 cables are used for which I have disconnected because I,v not found anything which doesnt work yet. Of does anyone know what the abriviations on the attached pin out stand for? and are all the marged grounds common?

Sorry to hijack, (or maybe its a help) I have one of these (mines a genuine Dietz/Soundlinx one) that I just removed from my MFD2 if anyone wants to buy it, works perfectly, just swapping cars.

PM me if you need further info

Did you have to do anything with moving connections to retain the existing iPad connection in the jumbo box?
