Cambelt or Chain

Featured Replies

Sorry if this question has been asked before, but there seems to be some confusion as to whether the 1.6 FSi engine has a cambelt or a chain. Can anyone give a definitive answer? Thanks RH.

I belive all fsi engines are chain driven, Regards Jason.

Many thanks for the two replies. I now know that the 1.6 fsi engine has a chain driven double overhead camshaft. Cheers from RH.

If all FSI engines (inc 2.0 TFSI) are chain driven does this mean you never have to change the chain, as you have to with a belt driven system?

Hang on a sec, if you read the wiki carefully you'll see that the 2.0 TFSi engine DOES use a belt. Only the latest 2.0 TFSi engine (not currently used on the vRS) has the chain.

2.0 R4 16v TFSI 125-210kW (EA113) as used on Octavia vRS and Mk5 Golf GTi - "belt and roller-chain driven double overhead camshaft (DOHC)" - the chains are part of the camshaft timing, however it's a belt that drives the system from the crank.

2.0 R4 16v TSI/TFSI 132-155kW (EA888) (The latest 2.0 TSFi) as used on the Mk6 Golf GTi- "This all-new EA888 range is notable for utilising simplex roller chains to drive the two overhead camshafts, instead of the former engines' toothed-rubber timing belt"

So us vRS owners need to save those pennies for the inevitable cambelt change......... :'(

Then somebody needs to either:

1. Update Wiki

or

2. Speak to some dealers

Both dealers I've spoken to have told me that the Petrol Octy vRS I maybe ordering before the current "VAT Free" offer expires will have a chain driven system - no belts and no need to change them.

Maybe the latest vRS takes the EA888 engine then. But I'd rather trust wiki than a salesman...... :giggle:

There seems also to be two quite different styles of chain on these engines

Latest TSI VRS is chain driven I believe.

The vRS has used the chain engine since the facelift, same engine as the GTi/Rocco

Wiki is correct, it states the EA113 engines are now discontinued. EA888 (chain driven) is the current engine used in VRS, Golf GTI Mk6, Scirocco etc but there are different power outputs - 197hp, 208hp.

I'm confused........................does my vRS have a chain or not-I thought it was belt driven (picked it up in December 2010)

If it's MY2010 petrol it's defo a chain.

It it's got a big square engine cover/air box it's belt, if it's got a oil filter you can see pointing up on the left it's a chain.

Its got a oil filter pointingup on the left side with a small rectangular engine cover.......so does that mean I've got a chain? (car was built on the 16th November and was picked up on the 11th December so coming up to almost two months old)

While I'm at it-does anyone know how to include pictures on here?

Doesn't the TSI have the dipstick on the side of the engine, whereas the TFSI (belt) has dipstick on the front ?
