Pic request - fold away towbar electrics

Featured Replies

I've got a standard towbar on my estate, and as I use my towbar mostly for kitebuggy and bikes, I can get away with just a number plate because the rear lights are left clear and seen by other road users. The combined carrier does not use the towball but it's one bracket, so I leave the towball off as it leaves the back end of the car a bit neater.

However, I'm going to have to use my trailer for a long journey soon, and as it's a 10' bed and I'll be travelling overnight (and good 300 mile journey each way), I'm gonna have to wire up the electrics, which so far I've been putting off as I want to have the socket hidden but accessible.

Can some kind soul post up a picture of how their flip up socket is attached to the car? I've got an idea of using tiger seal and some hinged bracket on the underside of/inside the bumper, but seeing how the proper one operates (and even perhaps a part number/supplier as I've looked with no joy) would be a massive help.

Thanks in advance

Steve.

I've got a foldaway on my new Octy.

If you're around, pop by the house and you can take a look matey.

I've got a detachable towbar on my mk1 estate and you dont really notice it unless you are on ground level. From a normal stand/sit point its very subtle.

:( Beware of the CAN bus electrics feeding the lights, you might have to fit either a relay unit that isolates the new outputs or fit a unit that uses the CAN bus to activate the outputs, have a look at Towsure - http://www.towsure.com/bespoke/dedicated-wiring-kits.html cheers - Stuart.

That is a seriously LOVELY car...

Thanks JC

Although I can't take the credit for it. It's now in my ownership and i've already spent approaching 2k on it and giving it some tlc and sorting a few niggles. In all fairness all the hard work was done by Eddy H, Bill & Cuppra Matt who has recently completed all the service and maintenace.

But you are right, its a very, very, very nice car:cool: I look forward to driving it every time (although the wifes got it for the daily commute at the moment:eek:)

I suppose I should put it in the members cars but its so well known I didnt bother:)

I did look around the site at estates with towbars, and none of them seemed to have the flip up electrics that are out of sight when not in use.

I saw what is now your car, and thought if nothing turns up, that is the next best solution.

Thanks for posting the pic.

Thanks Stuart. I purchased the Towsure plug and play wiring kit last year after reading up on it all.

No worries, i've just dropped you a PM anyway. :)

I have a removable towbar where the electrics are on a pivot parallel to the rear bumper and fold up close to the exhaust. I'll see if I can shoot a good image if I get a mo.

Hope this helps :)
