Car adverts

Featured Replies

You know how car manufacturers often feature other marques in their adverts but disguise them by removing badges, making slight changes to light clusters or grills?

Well in the new Golf advert, the one which goes on about "like a Golf", there's some boy racers examining some souped up purple monstrosity which is, surely, a Golf? (Looks like a Mk4 to me). Am I wrong?

By the by I can't help but try and work out what these disguised cars really are, the Ford Mondeo ad where the guy pushes his car out of the garage attached to some balloons? Mk1 Sierra if I'm not mistaken (which seems a little ironic). :nerd:

Not seen the Golf one, but you're right about the Ford one...

I thought exactly the same thing. Surely that's a mk4 golf!

Oh and the other one I hate is the Ford "Kinetic Design" crap. No it does not look like it's moving even while it's stationary you coke ridden prats.

Maybe you could say that about a Lambo, but not a Focus!

Since the point of the ad (I actually understood this one) is how much better the new Mondeo is than things like a 1983 Sierra, I fail to see the irony.

Because, while slating the competition directly is frowned upon surely having a pop at your own previous efforts is worse?

That's my take on it at least.

Seems it's only me and Wega who think it's a Mk4 (3?) Golf then, I know Ken's curmudgeonly reply was a bit of a thread killer but come on peeps!

I might as well add that every time the Peugeot 'Verve' ad comes on ["fact me"] I hit a gerbil with a lump hammer (I have a good supply of gerbils and a big lump hammer).

Ah but they give you special extra features like Mats, what more could you want for your money

Don't forget they give you 'change'.

Peugeot 'Verve' ad is IMHO a bit misleading, as it states the car is £12445 OTR, but if you go to their website you have to pay an extra £400 to have paint on the car.

Man I hate that Peugeot advert. You have it thrust down your retinas 20 times a day if you try and watch the Ashes.

I still think the best ever car advert was the Honda one with lots of car bits in a line. I think it was named "The Cog" The one after that with the choir was good too. Both of them still didn't convince me to buy a Honda though.

I thought it might have been a 306 in the Golf ad.

As for using a Ford Sierra in the Mondeo advert it probably cuts down on the risk of getting sued if you use one of your own cars, albeit an old one.

I think its a mk3 golf personally :) An outsider could be mk2 ibiza as the gti/cupra was golf engined.

In the previous part of the ad, the guy does a handbrake turn type thing with cockpit and external footage. Inside the car, I think it might be a new civic from the edge of the dash by the driver's door but from the outside its clearly not. Any thoughts? (Thanks to PVR )

Have you noticed how car manufacturers are featuring their old models in adverts. There was Renault with that new 4X4, recently Citroen and now BMW. The Ballooned Sierra in the Mondeo advert was a MKII (from 1987 on).

there was never a MKII sierra... it was however a facelift in 1987.

IIRC you cant call a facelifted version of a mark I car a mark II, the new golf is just a very comprehensive face lift and shouldn't be considered a new model

What about the mk3 and 4 escorts? That's simply a facelift. That ad also featured old mondeos too.

Peugeot and renault have done it as well when showing scenes with other cars.

I think the one in the Golf ad is a mk3 Golf. I've only seen it the once so can't be sure. VW have a history of mocking bodykitted Golfs so it's no irony, just like the Sierra in the Ford ad. Also including models from the parent company in adverts reduces the risk of being sued!

I've decided. Definitely a real (albeit heavilly trevved up) Mk IV.

Anyone worked out what the Peter Kay-alike is driving in the Top Gear knock off bit?

I'm going for Honda Civic for the Peter Key-alike bit, for the interior shots, and the exterior shots are a 1 series. Not at all confident though!

Reg check on autotrader puts it down as a 525d Sport(E60)

These advert makes go to some right lengths! :) Different car for interior and exterior and temporary plate for the shoot by the look of it.

I've just found this thread (don't ask me how!)

My take on what most seem to think is a Mk3/4 Golf - the bit of the ad when the guys are on the driveway, with the camera positioned inside the garage looking out? Mk2 Fiesta with a Golf-esque kit on it! I know, a little hard to believe - will have to find a copy of the ad and show you.

On the other issue of the Ford ad with the cars floating away, was it just me who thought that was a pretty negligent and un-environmentally friendly stance to take? You think your car is old, rubbish and you want something better - so you just attach baloons to it and let it fly away? Was a stupid ad that did nothing for my opinion of Ford (IMHO!)

Cheers,

Steve.

I think it looks like a Mk3 not a Mk4 Golf in that ad.

I thought the pink one was a Vx Nova :o but i just watched the ad again and it's def not

Now i think it's a 306 :giggle:
