The Nikon 55mm f2.8 Micro (image heavy).

Featured Replies

I've been looking forward to road testing this 55mm manual focusing AIS lens but due to work I've had no time to do so.

Best I've got so far is a few test shots indoors. I've been trying out a home made flash diffuser:D Subject matter is my Grandsons Dr Who figures:O Oh and an old Capri.

The flash diffuser. Made from an old milk carton and some cardboard.

Very nice - May I add a couple? I have that lens too and use it on my Nikon FE.

Thanks Mr Postman:thumbup:

Do you have the SB900? Have you seen the size of that sucker? Wish I had one but I can't justify the cost. I don't do much flash photography.

Super dooper :)

Yeah treat myself for the wedding, it does rather dwarf the D80 especially with the 50 mm lens on, should come with its own tripod collar

Thank you. Just goes to show you don't need to spend £1000+ on glass to get nice images.

This one was £150 on E-Bay iirc. I think it was made in the 1980's, the manual focus takes some getting used to but it's all good fun.

Nice one. It looks very complicated.

How are you getting on with it?

Yeah I'll get myself a nifty fifty one of these days for the 350 :)

Reading Ken Rockwell he says (more or less) 'don't bother with the 55, the 60 is as good/better' then 'don't bother with the 60, the 105 is much better for macro'.

So the 105 (2.5 or 1.8?) is the macro lens of choice? [Edit: don't mind me, I was looking at manual focus lenses]

The fifty is a little gem, bargain to boot, it's got to be done:D

The instruction book is 140 pages long  Starting to get my head round it but not all its features are automated on the D80 and others depend which lens you have fitted so it is quite a steep learning curve and after much swearing....................... Its back in the box

Soon as we have the grand bairns round again swmbo wants some more shots doing so will see if all the reading as paid off :)

There are a lot of offerings for Macro/Micro.

If I had plenty of cash I'd just get the 105mm f2.8 VR Micro. Then there's the Tamron 90mm f2.8 which is around the £350 mark. I've seen lovely images taken with both of these lenses.

Sigma do the 150mm Macro which is another nice lens. Those are the three I'd be picking from if money was no object.

It's a whole other ball game that flash stuff. I start having a read about it and get bored very quickly. I prefer to just have a go and learn from my mistakes.

The SB600 only gets very basic use, I've never tried anything to creative:O

Looking forward to your wedding pics, don't forget to share, no matter what:D

Did you say you might be going for another body too? D700 cough:D

No No No, definitely not, and thrice again no. I leave the bodies to Miss Lorraine :P

Is that a Sony A350? :D I've got one, having fun with it, but find using Aperture priority very frustrating! Any tips?:o:thumbup:

No a proper 350 ;)

Lol, Canon EOS 350D. Think there's some Sony D-SLR users about on here though, so worth a separate post asking about AP tips?

Steve

Yep, good guide that - I've read through it. Decent forum that, too.
