There is' date=' but like I said, you can buy a tuning box and it can sit on your shelf unused - doing this with a remap is a bit trickier!

So it's easier to argue that a tuning box has never been fitted to a car...

It's never good when a company that's sold you a product has to cease trading because they've been investigated for piracy and received a hefty fine!

If there is nothing illegal about what they're doing, then it isn't a concern...just thought I'd ask though, as the cost of licensing an "aftermarket" remap is what most tuners argue makes a remap relatively expensive. So I assumed there'd be a cost involved with licencing the original map, unless they didn't bother or they didn't have to...

Jabba, Revo and APR offer this service, being 3 of the biggest names I'd hope they aren't doing anything illegal. As an example Jabba have being around a long time and advertise this feature on their website, if it was dodgy I very much doubt they'd do this.

Revo and I think APR write their own software the high cost of a remap is down to R&D not licensing in their cases.

Getting any remap/tuning box has it risks and of course rewards. You just have to way the two up. If you go by the manufacturers book just about everyone has voided their warranty be it from using non-VAG screenwash, having new tyres fitted but not by the dealer. You just need to use common sense.

IMHO there will be more evidence of a tuning box having being fitted than an OBD remap. With a tuning box the connectors will have the dirt/dust rubbed off from handling, the ECU will have been working outside it's internally set tables and it's likely that there will be DTC's stored as a result of this. With a remap the tables are changed so the ECU doesn't see anything abnormal, therefore no error codes and no physical indicators to the dealer that there is anything untoward.

Any ODB remap is detectable.. there is no way to make them undetectable. Anyone who claims their ODB remap is invisible is lying. Simple as that.

A tuning box is undetectable as you remove it prior to inspection. As Jon says the only way to remove the ODB program is to change the ECU from stock.

APR do not claim their remaps to be undetecable. If Jabba / Revo do i would be surprised as this is not possible.

Dunno.

Why?

Encrption...was asking as surely the ECU code must be decrpyted before is can be swapped out due to checksum match????

I'm sure the checksum is not just the size of the code and would include some of the data.

I don't know about Jabba but Revo don't claim their remaps are invisible. However I know of a revo'd car that had a new turbo under warranty without probs with the ECU set to stock mode.

Is undetectable the same as invisible?

No.

Invisible means that if it is given a cursory examination by a dealer they won't necessarily find it.

Undetectable menas that there is no record of it ever having been anything other than standard.

Thought as much :)

I meant it to be the same, I think it's covered in the FAQ's on Revo's site anyway so maybe have a look there.

Jabbasport have this to say about remaps on their site:

'Our remaps are virtually invisible to diagnostic tools and will not trigger fault codes. BUT as with ALL remaps or software, this includes OBDII programming, reading the ECU's flash memory will reveal all regardless of mode selected. All are well within insurance approved assessor capabilities if required. ECU numbers and check sums are linked, and changes in flash will force the check sum to change.

We strongly recommend you inform your insurance company of any changes.'

what sort of power to these tunning boxes give? as good as a jabba remap?

Not applicable to yours, diesel only.

Not as good as they are more crude than a remapo as they don't have access to the internal ECU maps and work primarily on fuelling.

My mate droped his 03 Golf PD150 to the dealer to get an oil leak fixed on this rocker cover and just removed his Tune Box before he drpoed it in and the first thing they said to him, was that there was a fault up on the ECU saying !OVER BOOST!

is it normal practise to check for fault codes when having work done on the car? and what did they say about the overboost?

was that there was a fault up on the ECU saying !OVER BOOST!

Did he then say "fair cop, guv" and confess to having a tuning box on it?

Or did he insist they fix the car as there was no evidence that he'd ever used a tuning box?

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that this sort of thing can also happen with other forms of tuning where the original map is restored when the 'gizmo' is removed. :(

ok,some good stuff

Tavia, when you refer to second Ecus, are you referring to piggybacks? i aint bothered about warranty,i am getting this as a co car because its free,so all i need is something to protect in case of the Ecu being sent away after an accident.I am not bothered at all about dealers, just Skoda Uk

1. AmD opens the ecu to change the chip inside

2.It is a shame the AmD one click doesnt yet work with the 1.8T petrol engine

1. Not these days they dont, or not very often anyhow, if it can be done serially it is.

2. The AmD One Click for the 1.8T was shelved for various reasons, some have been published on here before some havent. But there will be a new version for the 1.8T that is in development/production, however it will be pretty evident that something has been done.

Dave, nope, a complete replacement. Can pick 'em up on ebay at a reasonable price. Put your standard one in a cupboard for a rainy day :D

What do you do with it when it rains?

I have scrooted several chipped cars including some from the current VW championship and have had the chance to talk to the tuners and none have claimed to be totally invisible. The bottom line seems to be if skoda uk or an insurance company look hard enough they will find signs of any remap, whether by electronic methods or by the breaking of seals etc

one company, very well known here gave that information immediately when I was asking about have my current vRS done.

It is not cheap to get the equipment to interrogate the ECU but if they want to use the information to dispute a warranty claim for a new engine or reject an large accident claim then a company could well consider the cost to be a good investment!

I think the safest answer is - If you cannot risk a remap etc being found dont have it done

If you cannot risk a remap etc being found dont have it done

Which is what I said earlier :) As I also said, if you want to do it, get a replacement ECU and mod that :D
