Stopped my Mum getting ripped off

Featured Replies

What age is the Micra Jase? I'd be really inclined to take it to a decent trusted local specialist/independant.

My Mum has an '03 1.4SVE auto and that just needs the regular stuff doing and it gets taken a trustworthy local indy. It's as reliable as the day is long and I can see it running forever! Think the only 'proper' bits its needed in 3yrs are brakes - as it's an auto it tends to be heavier on them and it spends all the time in the urban jungle....

It's an 05 plate. :) Very low miles bought by my Mum I think 2.5 years ago with 16k on the clock, and now it only has 22k. Will recommend using an Indy, and I can teach her about getting the bits & bobs from the local motor factors so the Indy only needs to charge labour. :)

Definitely the route I'd take :)

Which spec's she got? I was amazed at this SVE - keyless entry, parking sensors, full climate, auto wipers - on a Micra

"S" :o - has remote locking, elec windows, but not much else. Not a fan of the gutless 1.2 auto, but around town it's good enough.

The standard brakes don't wear particularly well in my experience - stop the car fine, but wear quickly (front discs/pads lasted me about 15 months), and as the spec on the discs is something quite low (IIRC it permits about 2mm of wear) the dealer will end up highlighting that they need changing every time the car goes near them.

Currently using Mintex pads and discs, they seem to be wearing much better and they don't feel overly dramatic compared to the OEMs.

Useful to know for next time Rob, thanks. As she likes going through brakes :)

Her's never goes near the dealer network. They were done at my local indy, so I know they needed doing. I also went out in it myself beforehand

This is one reason I am glad I am reasonably knowledgeable about cars. 1,000 miles ago someone told my mum she'd need new discs & pads on the front of her (05) Micra in 1,000 miles.

Sounds like Kwik fit territory of old....Went in there and got a similar answer - never been back since....
