Front Mount Intercooler On 1.4TDi

Featured Replies

Im aware of the bennifits of having an intercooler, is it possible to have one fitted to a 1.4TDi seems like a stress less mod for the engine, but keeping the temps alot lower, am wondering if this coupled with the intake and exhuast should give a nice increase when the car gets remapped.

Thank you

I have a 1.9TDI fmi! will fit on the same 1.4tdi ... I guess

noticed any improvments over the standard set up?

After a few acceleration intake air temperature jumped over 70c(original cooler)

Dyno temperatures ran away far too high, dyno mechanic tell me change cooler and coolerpipe

fmi temperatures remain below 40c

Just bear in mind you'll increase turbo lag with an FMIC... if you stick to the original turbo :)

not to sound stupid but why is that?

You have more air coming in, but standard boost and fuelling settings on the original mapping, so the turbo will take a little longer to spool up.

hmm surely tho reduce in intake temperature would make things better, But from what your saying getting it mapped soon after it would be the best option, i presume a stage 1 generic remap wouldnt fit the bill tho :( thanks by the way for your help

You're on the right track with things, as a reduction in intake temps is good. You're also unlikely to suffer from heatsoak in hot weather, where the stardard side-mount intercooler gets overwhelmed. But judging by this year, heatsoak is hardly a concern!

Put simply, you're making a change to how the car's functioning, so a remap would be advisable. Generally speaking you would need a custom map, so the mapper can see how the car responds 'live' to changes to boost and fuelling values. It all depends on the mapper you use, who may have done a similar map previously, so could adjust this slightly and apply it as a 'generic' map for you. Generic maps are really pretty good these days, but as ever - it all depends on who you goto :)

The theory behind it is that with longer pipework and a larger intercooler it will take longer for the boost to reach the combustion chamber . . . in reality it isn't that bad.

I have a big intercooler on my Fabia with fairly minimal pipework and I wouldn't say there is any real noticable increase in lag.

Any change in car performance?

You will probably have a SMIC at the moment and it can possibly be upgraded.

SMIC???

SMIC = Side mount inter-cooler, rather than FMIC (front mount as you know).

Have never seen a Fabia II close up, but on the vRS people put vents in the wheel arches to allow better air flow to the IC, could this be done on the II before considering spending money on new hardware?

Cheers mate.

It was just generating some ideas, ive noticed one chap on here has fitted an intercooler to his 1.9Tdi, and on the mk2 there is a great bottom grill for cold air to feed it self to the intercooler. Am sure there is also systems to cool intercoolers further.

Not to mention it looks alot cooler

But i assume there has to be a limite to the size that you can use. In regards to what fits and the effectiveness Reading threw my haynes performance book ;) Its intresting to see HUGE intercoolers on small cars.

Thanks for peoples comments and help, keep them coming

Bigger is not always better. You need to consider flow, core design, size, efficiency etc.

Is there a rule of thumb how to measure which size is the correct size, also is there any company that someone would recommend as to supplies a good quality intercooler and fittings etc..

Also is it best to take to a proper vag specialist like jabba? rather than my garage down the road!

IMHO the 1.4 is for economy and if you wanted more power the best thing to do would be to either wait for a 1.6CR-TDI or sell it and get the extra 500cc.

Throwing money at it seems a touch pointless as the cash spent to do any serious upgrades to a 1.4, would be more than the cost to change to a 1.9 and probably wouldn't provide any more power.

Does the 1.4 need one? Anyone logged intake temps?

I looked at fitting one to my 1.4TDI (BNV 80BHP) as far as i can see for the ibiza the Seat Sport FMIC would fit fine , not sure if these fit the Fabia tho

ive got it mapped upto around 114bhp but i was planning a stage 2 remap with mods such as EGR Delete,De-cat and straight through exhaust, and FMIC

Been told that the BNV engine is only good for 120bhp so i didnt fancy splashing out around 1k more for 5bhp maybe

I think i might just go for a remap on mine, maybe a new exhuast. And wait until the new vrs comes out :D

I was going to get EGR Bypass , De-cat + Straight through exhaust and then get it mapped again

but just decided im 21 in December so might aswell get a different car then

Am the same dude, am 21 next june. And my god the insurance goes done by thousands. Ive already got a shortlist drawn up, and on my birthday am getting another car! something with more ummmmmmmmmmfh maybe ;)

Ive been a regular posted on TDISport.com for like 2 years so i want to really stick with a diesel , Im thinking MK1 Leon FR+ PD150 with some mods:D

But im also drawn to MK1 Leon Cupra R , MK2 Leon Cupra , or something like a S3

From information supplied to me by a diesel engineer, who drives a Golf 1.9 gtd, the temp of the air going into the manifold after the intercooller should be slightly warm. These are diesel engines not petrol and more coolling is not always a good thing.

The fuel in a diesel, as you probably know, ignites when injected into hot compressed air. The compressed air does not therefore need to be cold before it is compressed. The hotter the air is after compression the better combustion will be.

In fact my friend has his intercooler intake blocked off for a large part of the year, and he lives in the South of France. He also has his air intake redirected to the rear of the engine for the winter as well.
