2007 Octavia main beam too high

Featured Replies

The main beams on my 2007 4X4 2.0TDi do not adjust down with the dipped beams (as on Octavia 1and most cars) and therefore shine above the road, and into the trees when I have a full tank of fuel and/or a loaded boot (which is most of the time).

I think that this is made worse because the dipped beams stay on with main beam and therefore there is too much light in the foreground.

The car is still under warranty and I like it a lot...

My ideas:

>If main beams cannot be adjusted then change front springs for lighter engine or standard height versions.

>Change to 'extra bright' main beam lamps.

>Fit headlight relays to disconnect dipped beam when bright is on.

Does anyone have a cure or suggestion?

I'm dyslexic (bad memory and reading) and new to forums and all the jargon!

Get your dealer to check your light allignment under warranty.

It's very common that Skoda Techs have not checked lights at PDI. The other thing to check is that your suspension transport blocks were removed! Again, common issue with lazy techs

PDI = Pre Delivery Inspection

All you need to do is adjust the main beam downwards (or get your dealer to do it).

IIRC there is a black hex socket adjuster on each lamp unit which you just need put a few turns on; full details in your handbook I believe.

Thanks...

I now have headlamp alignment info and I'll persevere with a setup with a loaded vehicle.

Please describe "..suspension transport blocks..", their function and symptoms.

Regards

dealers dont do jack, when i had the problem with the xenons the full beam was spot on, since then the full beam is in the sky and they said they dont do full beam allignment and from what i can gather you need to find a light allignment specialist who has a digital set up to set the full beam correctly as it cant be done on standard, if i can find one ill let you know as i need to get mine done too.

Harsh ride. Do a search and you'll find pics from someone here that had them left on their Car - Fabia 2 IIRC.

me too i need to know how to check the suspension transport blocks if they are removed or not

What a load of twaddle. Aligning your main beam is not rocket science and easily done yourself, particularly if you are starting from a baseline of dipped beams correctly adjusted. You need the following;

Flat, level ground, brickwall (or similar) about 10m in front of the car, low light (doesn't need to be dark) 6mm hex key IIRC and screwdriver. Start the car and put you headlights (dipped) on; you will see a flattened 'Z' as the beam pattern; then put the main beam on which comes on with a sort of X (factor) pattern. You need to get the X of the main beam to sit in the right hand crook of the flattened Z (according to personal preference).

Adjustment is done using the hex key in a black plastic socket on bottom corner of the headlamp unit for up/down and using the screwdriver there is an adjuster on the top of the lamp unit under the slam panel to set the left/right. It also helps if you put some form of cover over the headlamp that you are not working on to block the light.

Depending on how precise you want to be job will take no more than 10 - 15 mins.

I hope that helps.

PS> I am willing to stand corrected if any of this is wrong as it is written from memory of having set mine up a little over two years ago. There is IIRC a guide to doing this somewhere on the forum that had a copy of the page/s from the Skoda technician handbook on how the job is done. :thumbup:

PPS> Just found a pic that shows the adjusters you need to use;- http://briskoda.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=18598&d=1200950578

top left is the screw for left/right and bottom right is the hex key for up/down.

I hope that helps.

Bright idea/s from Binaural!

I have tweaked both full beams down and they are now useful but disappointing. Their beam pattern is patchy. I'll try some Osram Nightbreakers or similar when a lamp dies, if not sooner!

To compensate for my original problem (no adjustment for load when adjusting dipped beams...) I set them to slightly different heights; which shows potential but needs fine tuning in use.

I still believe that having the dipped beams on as well is a bad idea. I'll work on that when my guarantee has expired!

Thanks to all of you and the forum...

Glad you have a (partial) solution; but I must take issue with your 'dip beam off when main beam on' stance.

IMHO it is a great feature to keep the dip beams on at all times as it provides illumination of the verge etc. that would not otherwise be there when using main beam.

You suggest different bulbs; definitely a route to go for both dip and main beam; I'd recommend Phillips Extreme (the Osram nightbreakers, whilst good, tend not to last too long). :thumbup:
