mpg Felicia 1.3

Featured Replies

What do folk find they get on their Felicia's (esp 1.3)

I'm managing about 38 - 39 (combination of city - country - Motorway. living in a city, tends to be a lot of right foot in city, don't hang about in the country, and of course don't do anything above 75 on the Motorway)

Apparently keeping it at 60 - 65 on the M-way reaps benefits?

I'm getting 35 at moment but have got high 30's low 40's on the last few tanks with mainly town driving and some short runs on the ring road.

You will see a huge improvement driving at 60-65 as apposed to 75 on the motorway.

When I went to the national meet the convoy was travelling at 56mph and I managed 46.7mpg on that run so there is another huge jump in economy when traveling at 50-55mph.

If you're interested in keeping track of your economy follow the link in my sig and create an account. Many people use it on here and it works by you inputting the details of the car and then inputting the mileage and ammount of fuel added at each fill up (and a fill up is hold the pump till it stops so it is full. 42 litres in the case of the Felly).

Official figures for a '94 1.3 Felicia (SPI, I'm assuming at that age) are 51.4/37.7/38.2 (56mph/75mph/urban). As you can see, going from 56mph constant speed to 75mph takes nearly 14mpg off the figures, so keeping your speed down will definately help.

Driving very carefully, I can just get 50mpg out of my 1.3 MPI on A/B roads and some town driving.

On average I get around 38mpg I do a mix of motorway, country and town driving. I have got it up to around 48mpg before but that was driving carefully

I have found it quite easy to get good fuel economy in this car actually. It just takes a bit of trial and error with which method works best. I have found that early shifting in this car is the key. After trying block changing from 2nd to 4th/5th etc I now just go through the gears generally and do roughly this:

2nd as soon as possible

3rd at 20mph

4th at 30mph

5th at 40mph

On a recent trip up to the Isle of Skye (some 400 miles away) including some driving on challenging roads with VERY steep gradiants etc with three adults (roughly 280kg of weight) plus a boot FULL of luggage (which included a 20inch CRT monitor at roughly 35kg) we got 42.7mpg for nearly the whole trip. That was 60mph on all motor ways and main roads (conditions permitting) and a fair bit of brisk overtaking slow people and keeping with the flow of traffic at point ;)

I averaged 40.1 mpg on a Fel 1.3 spi, driving 4400 miles from my house to Banjul, The Gambia, including the Sahara (which was considerably more on petrol) in a car that was loaded with spares, sand ladders, fuel and water, and included some flat-out sections of motorway in France and Spain, covering 800 miles on the longest day.

Speed is the biggest issue - wind resistance squares with speed, so any reduction in your cruising speed will lead to a decrease in fuel consumption (as long as you're in top gear and not too low for it to be working effectively), and acceleration is the other place you really use lots of fuel up; smoothness is everything. Avoid using the brakes and don't coast in neutral (on the overrun Felicias cut the fuel off completely until low revs, so coasting in neutral uses more fuel).

Well I've had two Felicia's over the past 6 years.

The first was a 1996SPI and I regularly got 46mpg out of it. And I mean a genuine 46mpg as well.

My 1998 Felicia mpi still does between 42 and 45mpg. Thats using it for work on the roads of Lincolnshire doing regular 100 mile round trips, sometimes with 3 or 4 people in the car!

Is the reason that some MPi engines don't get as good fuel economy down it those particular ones being the lower powered (54bhp?) version then?

Like I say it is pretty easy to get good consumption. Things like letting go of the throttle as soon as you see a red traffic light or stopped traffic etc helps. So many people carry on with their foot on the throttle and then brake last minute rather that letting the engine slow you down as soon as possible as stated above the engine won't use any fuel on over-run anyway (above 1800rpm i believe).

It is early days to give an accurate mpg for my son's newly aquired 1.3 GLi Estate; after 3 1/2 weeks we are still on the first tankfull. The 1/4 tank mark came tonight, with about 320 miles on the clock; I will brim the tank Saturday night; before he goes back to his Mum's, and work out the MPG from that. The 1/2 tank mark suggested about 43MPG, mostly 30-50 MPH with him learning to drive and me going cross country to his Mum's house and back.

Not in my case, mines a 1300gli 68bhp.

i have a 97 1.3 mpi 68 bhp engine and yes its **** i got 140 miles to 20 quid petrol been at 105.9p its amazing that it works out to be around 34 mpg................

however......... if i hated that fact it didnt travel for per tank id have sold it by now, i love it to bits plus its more fun then most beemers which dont get as far per tank.....

you realy do need to be a lover of the car to enjoy its down sides!!

:rofl::rofl::rofl::eek::eek::eek::eek::(:(:):):):):rotz::rotz::rotz::rotz::D:D

Either there is a problem with the car, or you have a very heavy footed driving style.:rotz:

coming back to Manchester from Dumfries last night - keeping to 60 - 65 on the M-way (yes, keeping to the inside lane! i despise mid lane cruisers) made a huge difference.

and hard accelleration in 4th gear 40 - 60 mph really seems to make the engine drink it too. You can almost see the needle falling.

I might see if i can be careful and get 45mpg on my next big trip somewhere.
