Horrible noises since Coilovers

Featured Replies

Guys,

Firstly - I know topics like this have been posted before. But i know pretty much Jack about cars and those topics go on about more then one issue.

Before i went for coilovers - my car drove around happy as you like with no unusual noises!

Since ive had my coilovers fit the car isnt half making some weird noises. Like creeks, nothing really knocking. Had the car looked at - nothing fouling anything.

Now strangely enough - we had masses of rain last week . . . I mean, it was like driving through a river. After doing this for 20minutes or so, the car sounded like its old self . . . well, what you'd expect from fitting coilovers. After a car or two, the weather dried up and the noises came back.

Ive been told it'll be the bushes on the car. Awesome took a look and gave me some advice - Unfortunatly ive alot of things going on with my family, meaning im having to take time off work and i just cant afford to drop the car off with Awesome for them to sort out! A mate is happy to fit whatever i buy when he MOT's my car but he thought it'd be a good idea to post it up here and see what people have replaced in relation to curing any coilover enduced noises.

Ive been told the front anti roll bar bushes need replacing already and are likely to be playing a big part in this. Awesome GTi have the powerflex bushes for these in 16mm, 18mm and 19mm - which will i need?

They've a little list of these bushes, with money being an issue at the minute, which ones will i need guys?

Will i need to change anything else? Top mounts (ive seen these on ebay - would they do) etc?

Sorry for the essay!

I'm having very similar issues looked at as I type. I'll tell you the outcome. Can't tell you the bush size you need, I'm afraid...

fabia vrs roll bar is 19mm, did you check the driveshafts and antiroll bar aren't rubbing? i know mine done this and i had to put shorter drop links in, think my drop links were out of a ford mondeo mkii but just check these are correct before you order them

depends on what brand of coilovers you have fitted i know you need shorter drop likes for the likes of vmaxx, but i have kw v1's on my car and never needed shorter drop links, i also have a noise since fitting the coilovers when you go lock to lock and then start pulling off as if the springs are turning, anyone else had this issue?

check your top strut mounts?

seemed ok when i fitted them and only done 20k

Well, the springs DO turn with the wheels on McPherson struts AFAIK...

Had mine looked at for THIRD time, and they were fine when I first left the garage, but were getting noisy again by the time I got home. The odour of GT85 tells me what the fix seems to be!

Good news is, it passed its MoT, so it can't be anything TOO serious...

Just been reading on another thread how the vRS has different top mounts to the rest of the Fabia I range, which got me thinking...

The Konis I have aren't listed against the vRS, but this is supposedly because they haven't been tested on it rather than any technical reason. If, however there IS some fundamental difference between the top mounts, then maybe the answer is to use standard ones - ASSUMING THEY FIT???

Lol, tell me about it mate, all sorts of clunks and rubbery squeeks, strange as you say as when the road are damp they are a LOT quieter?

I've had brand new cupra bushes and powerflex bushes on the wishbones, new droplinks, new top mounts and bearing, and also fitted brand new ARB bushes a few months ago but the old ones look fine?

I just get on with it now, though its ****ing me off loads.

Thanks for the replys!

I cant just get on with it . . . it sounds like the car is about to collapse.

I had the car checked for rubbing or fouling . . . nothing going on!

The fact it went when the car drove through a river of rain would suggest this is a bush issue! I just need to be told which Bush's i need to buy!

Someones already said 19mm Anti roll bar . . . So thats getting ordered! ;)

But what else guys?

Seen these on ebay . . . would these be making noises post coilover?

SKODA FABIA FRONT STRUT TOP MOUNT/BUSH on eBay (end time 15-Sep-09 10:49:17 BST)

glad i didnt go for any coilovers now lol

easy way to avoid this....don't buy cheap coilovers, never had these problems with kw's finest, there is a reason they are expensive!!!!

Fair point - you do get what you pay for! We all know this.

But if its bush's making a noise, why would a different brand stop this? - I actually dont know, not asking to be difficult! ;)

i'll be honest i don't know:D but the folk who buy the decent stuff rarely post up with problems,it just seems to be the budget end of things that result in threads like these:thumbup:

Granted - Budget coils results in mega **** ride quality . . . But i dont see how it can then effect bush's or whatever else (if someone knows why, please speak up! Im not disagreeing at all).

Regardless of whether the brand caused this - I need to know what to buy to stop it . . . and dont say KW's because if i fit them and found out it was still noisy, my head would explode with anger!

which ones do you have mate ?

**** ones!

lol, which ones are they

Well, my Konis aren't coilies, and while they're the cheapest in the range, they're supposedly no different EXTERNALLY to Sports and FSDs (other than the colour and lack of adjusters), and they certainly weren't fitted by cowboys! I think I'm going to look at the top mounts, as I mentioned before...

according to Ross its something to do with the shorter springs not putting enough pressure on the top mounts

Surely the pressure on the top mount is the same, irrespective of spring length? And mine are only an inch shorter anyway? Then again, why else would there need to be different mounts for the sporty and standard versions? :ne_nau: OTOH, the noises go away in the wet, and when the bushes are sprayed!

dave mines the same , fooking horrible tbh

i had a seat ibiza in this week with the same problem, noise from upper strut mounts, we checked everything for movement or not tight enough, still there, fitted the upper strut moiunt from my fabia and this cured the problem, only thing i can think is by lowering the car your camber is different, and the strut brace stiffens it up again?, let me know what you's think about this theory

so the AP dont have helper springs ?!
