MAF - How Much ?

Featured Replies

ive recently come back from Scotland, and i got 55mpg driving for hours on end at 70mph, some people seem to get this driving around town, i like to think i read conditions well and i certainly dont drive the car hard, its nursed if anything but i dont labour it either

quite a number of people on here see 50mpg+ from town driving, and 60mpg+ from motorway driving, is it worth trying a new MAF ?

how much are they ?

In my opinion that sounds spot on. OK I don't have a VRS, I've the 1.9TDI but I've read many MPG related threads previously and peoples concerns are for when they can't get over the 55MPG mark.

I'm always looking at what the trip computer measures and on a 80 mile trip consisting of A/B roads I can normally get 58MPG. I did this trip the other day with quite a lot of overtaking and an extremely heavy foot on the throttle just to see what the difference was and I got 49MPG. Still impressive I thought for the change in driving style.

It seems that many VRS owners on here don't hit over 50MPG simply because they like to have a bit of fun in the car which again leads me to believe that 55MPG isn't that bad? I have found that motorway driving isn't as economical in my diesel as I expected, my foot is always on the accelerator keeping speed and you give it the boot when you're passing others.

On the actual note of MAF pricing, I'm certain that they are £30-£35 so not particularly expensive should you really want to give one a go. When was the last time the car had a thorough service? Perhaps a simple air filter change may give you the a slight MPG increase, there was a member recently who changed theirs after noticing a sudden dip (45 odd MPG) and that solved their problem. I don't really think there's anything wrong but someone else may shed a bit more light! :P

Your sig says a 53 plate VRS? In that case it would have the MK1 gearbox which has longer gear ratios, or at least a longer 6th gear. So in theory it should be more economical as its running at lower revs so I would've thought a very long motorway run would be better than 55mpg?

Then again the variations between peoples MPG has been much discussed here, I personally never see above 45mpg (calculated not computer) unless a long motorway trip which is 50mpg if I'm very lucky. So 55mpg on a 53 plate VRS sounds fine?

your complaining cos only getting 55mpg?

55mpg is the best ive ever got, usually i see 43-45mpg on average, click the mpg in my sig to have a look

Hello BRUN,

45mpg is about average for me, have driven with care for miles and makes the MPG increase so slight, that I gave up out of frustration.

Got attitude!! lets see what we can get past today !!!! LOL

If I want economy I'll use a push-bike. LOL

is the OE part a Bosch one ?

pardon my ignorance. what is a MAF?

Mass Air Flow sensor, it sits between the air filter and the turbo/intercooler on the TDI fabias ;)

The most I got was 60mpg on a trip to Scotland 2month ago and I average 45mpg, my car is a 1.9TDI PD100

Unlikely to be a MAF fault with your MPG, althugh they are easy to change 15mins.

Euro Car Parts sell them for about £60 exchange and are the same as the OE ones and comes with the alloy housing. An old airfilter will have more effect on mpg than your MAF, it is worth cahnging every year.

air filter was changed in Jan/Feb IIRC

ive been told that MAF's sometimes only last 40k and its possible with my car on 60k that it may be on its way out, but not sure if this is correct

Like most car parts, some last forever and some don't. My Golf TDI Maf lasted 40k. and was changed and the VRS is on 90k and never been changed.
