Re-map pro's/con's

Featured Replies

Ive put my name down for a remap on my mk1 fabia vrs but have started to wonder what damaging affects if any it could do to the car.Is it safe to have the map done and increase the power upto around 170bhp from 130bhp.Could it damage the turbo, engine, clutch or gear box?I dont really know much about the technical sides of cars so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Yes there will be increased wear on turbo/clutch but for a stage 1 remap (170BHP), the most commonly replaced item is the clutch... which may last in its current state for several thousand miles after or not!

My mates Fabia VRS has had it's remap for over 30k, cars done 66k in total and is still on it's original clutch and flywheel. And believe me when i say this car gets driven hard!

Drop the gears, drive it like a petrol it'll be fine. Don't floor it at any less than 2k also

clutch is an absolute lottery.

had mine done on 42k just ticked over 50k and dmf is rattling a bit at idle but no clutch slip, though I do drive with care to clutch.

my advice is dont go for the remap if you cant afford to have the clutch replaced - about £400-1200 depending on clutch spec.

Defo a lottery draw with remaps. Given most people get a map so they can drive faster, then everything in the drivetrain is going to be under more strain. 6 speed box is used in much more powerful cars, but diff crown wheel is held to carrier with rivets, and can let go, but usually only with crazy power.

SMF to replace DMF will safeguard against DMF failure, but expect more gear chatter at idle, and more rapid gearteeth wear on 1st and 2nd gears.

Rough guide, MAP=Increased Insurance+likely clutch work needing doing+more mods to follow  It's a slippery slope.
