Is it ok to mix oils?

Featured Replies

Hey guys, ive got a 2003 Fabia VRS and the oil is on minimum, but i cant find any small jacks of the same oil i used to fill it up, but i am able to get oil that is the same type (5w-40 fullysynthetic) in a small jack, seen as they are both the same type of oil is it ok to top it up with a different make, i.e. top up Carplan tripple r with Castrol Edge? as they are both fully synthetic 5w-40? cheers guys.

As long as they are the same grade and meet VW spec I personally would not worry about it.

Make sure the oil you use meets the VW spec (506 or 507etc) that is stated in the handbook. If you buy a litre of 'top up' oil from a Skoda dealer it usually comes in a zip up pouch with a velcro backing to make it easy to carry in the boot.

Hello GEZ,

If the car is a Fabia VRS 130bhp, then VW 505.01 fully synthetic spec.

Prices vary, I pay £36 for 'Halfords' own brand (with stated spec I add) for 5litres.

As regards to mixing, as said must be the same spec oil, brand not important.

Is there any reason why you buy the Halfords own brand one when its almost £10 more than if you buy the oil from a main dealer?

Quantum Platinum ZGB115QLB00511 (meets 505.01) should be £24.06 +Vat (£27.66)

If you look in the manual, it says you can add up to 500ml (could even be 1l) of non-505.1 oil between changes...

I buy this from vwspares for £29 delivered in 5L bottles ideal for a full oil change. Meets 505.01 Spec as the previous poster mentions... I consider it a good price delivered!

Hello,

Usually they are sold in 4.5litre cans that you suggest, as opposed to 'Halfords' 5litre cans, needed for a service refill.

So to buy that extra 1litre can adds to the cost, and will push price past 'Halfords' oil.

I paid little over £25 for 5l of Millers XFE-PD

I always think that if the levels reached dangerous amounts then any oil is better than no oil, and would not hesitate to top up with any 5w 40 if it was all I could get. I carry a bottle of Shell Helix PD stuff, but the original contents are long gone and now I think it has Quantum platinum in it.

i also use the millers XFE-PD, you can get a 1ltr top up for £10-£15 from ebay.

i get mine from here

but as said anything that is 507 or 506 are fine, 505,01 is coverd in there specs. Dont do what my dealer did and put the wrong oil in (Castrol Magnet 505) :(
