1.6 TDI CR anyone got one?

Featured Replies

I have a 1.9 tdi octy,2005 and am looking at replacing it with the above. There seems to be very little info about this new engine and i am wondering if anyone on here has one and could share their thoughts and experiences. In particular comparing the new 1.6 to the old 1.9 and real world economy etc.

i think one person on here has one.......

Thanks for the feedback, keep it coming!

I am struggling to find a dealer with a demonstrator at the moment and whilst i will almost certainly end up buying one would like to try it first. I have even tried a couple of vw dealers to try a golf mk vi without success.

Hobin Skoda in Manchester have told us that they are getting a 1.6CR TDi in as a demonstrator - the last we heard last week was "it was on it's way and is in the North Sea at the moment" so it could be there now.

I hope they waterproofed it & still it'll put the rust protection to the test if it's in the North Sea!

I had a golf with one while my passat was at the dealers, drives exactly like the 1.9 105 PD but quieter, smoother and even better on fuel, i was getting 50mpg with out trying, take it for a run down the motorway and i was getting 60mpg

That's pretty much what I've heard. I've just bought a 1.9TDI as I couldn't stretch to the 1.6TDi CR (£1,000 more under the scrappage scheme). Everyone I spoke to said the new 1.6 was the preferred engine, plus it's better on CO2 emissions too so is in the current £35 tax band.

Yeah, it's on the road now, it's much smoother than the 1.9PD. If you want a test drive, call them on 0161 708 9000

Managed to test a golf se 1.6 tdi and both engine and car very impressive, although i shall be sticking with an octavia as it is better value!

Engine very much smoother and quieter than our existing 1.9- now just need to decide on spec and options etc any suggestions for must haves

Spair wheel is a good option to have, cheers Jason.

Thanks for that Jason. The spare in our current octavia hasnt ever been on the car and i may just keep it along with the jack and tools!

In order of importance/usefulness, I'd start with full sized spare wheel, cruise control, mp3 plug, air con, xenon lights and maxidot... Not sure what the base spec will already include though.

Well ive done it, ordered a 1.6 tdi cr probably have it begining of jan all being well.

In the meantime i am trying(without much luck) to find out as much as i can about the new engine ie is it sohc/dohc,8v/16v,timing belt/chain etc dealer doesnt seem to know!

Can anyone throw any light on this?

x evade_uk: how do you find yourself with the consumptions?

Skoda says: Urban Fuel:49.6 mpg, Extra Urban 72.4 mpg, Combined 62.8 mpg.

Is it true?

The Missus has the new Seat Ibiza 1.6 CR TDI.

Nice pokey engine, but I am disappointed with the economy. They quote 67mpg (combined), but if I drive my commute (30 mile mix) like a Nun, I struggle to get up to 55mpg - cruising at 70 gives you a real time reading of less than 50... Compared to my Octy vRS TFSI,which is quoted as 37mpg (combined), but for the same journey and driving can manage nearly 45mpg! (I average 32mpg but have a lot of fun!).

The Ibiza has only done 1000 miles, but I can't see mileage making THAT much difference - it needs a sixth gear (and some more low end torque to use it).

I'll be interested to see how the engine will handle the extra weight of the Octy.

It will.

My Bravo with a 1.6TDI engine got about 52mpg on the first tank and took about 4000 miles before it got to 62mpg on a tankful.

I am surprised how time and miles has improved the mpg on my wife's car

It is a Ford Focus Sport 1.6 TDCi 90hp common rail diesel

We struggled to get 50mpg when new, Ford quote 60.4mpg on combined

Now 3 years later and 40000 miles we average 55mpg and had a best of 57.5mpg on a run back from Dunbar

With the shortage of supply of these things, I guess it will be several months at least before any examples with this engine appear on Autotrader.

Is it likely that any will become available within the next year within a budget of £12k?

If you can wait a couple of years, you can have mine for that. :D

We have a '07 Fiesta with the same engine. It is capable of 55mpg all the time, while on longer trip 65+mpg is easily achievable.

I would comment that it needs more revs than my Superb 1.9Tdi and doesn't lug from lower revs nearly as well. At 50mph in fifth it begins to grumble, whereas, the Superb will pull in fifth gear from 40mph or slower, and with little over 1,000rpm.

My next company car is however, likely to be a Octy 1.6 CR (BIK 13%) due to the tax banding being 8% lower than my Superb (BIK 21%). There is also a significant improvement in fuel economy which is hard to ignore when I travel 30,000+ miles per year.

Still on the Fiesta, the ride quality on 15" alloy wheels is very supple, easily beating my Superb, no doubt due to Skoda's insistence on fitting tyres with Extra Load sidewalls.
