Help With Chosing Break Pads

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

My Fabia has had advisories a while back on slightly pitted discs. Yesterday the car had a service and the garage cleaned them up but said it is likely they'll need replacing in the next couple of months.

I often buy parts myself and sometimes fit myself or grab assistance from a mate so I'd like some help in selecting the right parts! .. I'm getting a quote from the garage but it typically works out more expensive if they supply the part, and I'd rather chose what I think is best from what I've read on the internet/forum

So basically, done the usual... visited vwspares / Eurocarparts but there seems to be so many options. Only looking at doing the rears first as they are in poorer condition but there seems to be much variety such as:

  • 239x18mm (1LB,1LM) (for Bosch caliper)
  • 256x22mm (1LQ,1LR) (for FSIII caliper)
  • 288x25mm (1LN,1LP) (for Lucas caliper)

Can anyone help? Its a 2001 TDI Fabia Elegance, 14" standard alloys.

Perhaps I'm really being daft I don't know! I've had a nosey round and there seems much talk about VRS pads/discs but I believe they are larger than what my car would require?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Dave

The best way to do it is take the wheel off, and see what is stamped on the caliper, and measure the diameter of the disc, and will answer your question

Also I think the VRs is 288mm so it only leaves two !

I'd say that all these options are for front brakes, the rear discs are only 232x9mm, the FS111 will be cast into the front callipers if that is which front callipers you have fitted - and you can read it easily enough through the wheel spokes as you have alloys fitted. If you are trying to get the right parts exactly, but still save money, why not buy Pagid front pads and Textar rear pads from GSF, give them your reg number - and maybe your vin and they should be able to pick the correct items as they have access to a "good" data-base of car parts - something very like VAGs own "CAR DATA". Getting ATE discs from ECP is a good idea though!
