Felicia Start up/Running problem 1.3MPi

Featured Replies

Hi Peeps

I have ready several posts about similar issues and just wanted to see if what was most likely in my case as they dont all seem to be exactly the same.

The problem is that when I start my 98 1.3MPi felicia it chugs like a tractor with the reves going up and down with each chug....until you give it some revs...then it behaves normally and drives well. Somtime when you drop the clutch on breaking the revs drop again the engine starts to die so you have to give it some revs. Otherwise it is fine. Any ideas on what the cause might be?

Am i right in understanding I can not adjust the idling speed as it is controlled by the ECU?. If this is a problem with the throttle assembly......what is it and how do identify it?

I would be most greatful if anyone has any words of wisdom on the mater or could put me on to the right tread.

Thanks in advance

John

Try cleaning the throttle body first. The Felicia does not have an engine management warning light, though the ECU can be checked for any stored codes.

Yes, you're right, the idle speed is indeed controlled by the ECU - it opens and closes the throttle plate with a motor that's part of the throttle body. You should be able to see it in action easily - if you see the black plastic quadrant that the throttle cable goes over, you will see a metal bar there; that will move as the ECU controls its position, you can usually see it working when you blip the throttle (I think it pre-opens the throttle a bit and then closes it to get the idle). If that's not working, then it could explain the problem, but getting the codes off the ECU (using an old laptop, the free version of VAG-COM and a serial cable to suit it) will be the best way to find out what's up.

I've never had any success with cleaning the throttle body in terms of fixing idling issues, they've all been down to other causes, but it won't hurt to clean it with a suitable cleaning agent.

A while ago now, but did you get anywhere in solving the problem?
