Has anyone found these tyres emit a funny smell when they've been put through a few bends with some pace?

  • Just put a set of the Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas on my vRS - very impressed. Loads of grip. Knock spots off the contis that were originally specced!

  • Are you sure it's the tyres ? :P

Yes as i got some very concerned looks from onlookers whilst actually sniffing the tyres.

They do smell a bit like poo, but they dont leave my kegs full of the brown stuff like the kuhmo 712's did in the wet. It was almost like understeer heaven with that cak on.

It almost smells like the new tyre smell mixed with dog poo............but then again i've a weird imagination and im probably floating off with the amount of Lemsip tablets i've consumed in the past week.

How new are your set of Vreds Browny?

I know exactly what you mean,

Big fan of the Vredsteins myself, then again I think faults people may find with them are more easily forgiven due to the excellent price

EDIT: Now i've woken up and re read the post, please look at my following post.

I don't feel that accurately describes their age! Is it new poo or old poo?! :P

Do you sniff a lot of poo? :D and does that make you a 'poofesional sniffer' :P

Oh sorry i misread the post :o

They was put on just over a month ago, think i've just covered around 1.5k since then.

I did notice a considerable difference afters scrubbing them in, covering 540miles in 3 days of travelling.

So your skid marks don’t smell any more?

No they've lost that fresh smell now....

My Vredesteins don’t smell of anything but rubber I think….hang on a mo……………

….brb………….

Now I am worried!

As they only smell when they've been pushed hard, its almost like a sickly smell.

In the sense as though some electronics have gone up in smoke and left that somewhat acidic whiff left behind that leaves you feeling a little sick i suppose.

But mixed in with a bit of dog poo to stir things up a little.

The kuhmo's use to leave you with huge skid marks in your underwear in the wet.

Then again i dont think it being wet outside was concerning me the most.....was a little damp on the inside of my kegs instead haha!

OK then! :D

My sensible response (sorry! :P) would be that it's still the remnants of the transport gunk and agent they apply to new tyres. I'd expect that to fade as the miles go by.

I hope so mate, it brings a tear to my eye when i get out of the car.

I brings back some unhappy memories hehe!

Sorry, im tying to hold back from really lowering the tone!

Oh God im trying to be serious and im talking about tones now, and skid marks/farting.

I manage it when im not even trying!

Nope mine don’t smell, but as I have a cold 'by doze is blokkk’d' :D

LOL. Sure you're not dragging a dead horse along or something?! Washed the car recently? :D

  • Author

No, ive not washed it in over a month.

Im just presuming its trying to tell me something else is going to go wrong with it though..........

OK; so you get your tyres a bit warm from time to time. If you're driving that hard won't your brakes be warm/hot too (and therefore smelly)?

Overall IMHO the Vreds stay pretty cool when the going gets tough, which bodes well for their longevity.

I used to use Toyo Proxes T1S's when they were "the tyre" rather than the crappo T1R's you get now and they used to smell lovely after a couple of laps of Castle Coombe, not to mention the fact that they melted nicely around the edges!!!

To be honest I've not smelled the tyres on the Octy as yet - the thing only has 1.3K on it so the whole car smells a bit strange anyway! That said, I'll make sure I remember to have a good sniff as soon as I get the chance. Won't e tonight as its peeing down today here in Brighton and I'm in London tomorrow but will look forward to a nice sniff on Friday

Browny - To be honest I reckon its a combination of Lemsip and snapped wishbones mate!

This is getting a bit silly, I mean smelling tyres, come on.

Getting back on topic, I read on the last page Auto-Express has done a tyre test recently. Has anyone got the mag, what are the results? How did the Toyo T1-Rs do (if tested) and which Goodyears did they test. I know Vredesteins always win or come close in there tests.

Problem being is you dont have to get close to actually smell them.

Maybe it will go once the releasing agents have been worn off as Wardy said.

You can read the full test here; Tyre Guide Winners | Auto Express

Its not got the Ultrac Sessantas tested but the Sportrac 3 as they used a smaller size. The Ultrac Sessanta was in the 2007 Evo tyre test (send me PM with your e-mail address for further info).

Did anyone else immediately think what i thought on reading that sentence :D

What a job that would be
