Door seals, cleaning / treating?

Featured Replies

I was slightly concerned after a few weeks of Vrs estate ownership (2008 PD), it creaked like an old ship!, but now I'm a little happier - just looking for a long term solution..

On pristine roads it was fine, but on poor road surfaces (99% of roads around my way) I was getting lots of strange creaks & groans from the rear of the car. I thought it was seats/shelf etc...

But careful application of silicone spray to the door & boot/hatch seals sorts it out entirely. Its a different car & far better & quieter.

But after about a week this wears off, I guess it dries out.

Am I alone in this?, maybe they have been contaminated with some dodgy car wash wax or something.

Does anyone know of a product or process to fix this long term? Thanks..

Vaseline?

Or would that rot the seals?

Vasiline should be fine. Rib it in with a cloth and wipe off any excess,

I've read a similar thread on this where the car was taken to a Skoda dealership and the seals sprayed with silicone and the car stayed quiet for a lot longer. My car looks to have white waxy stuff sprayed in around the hinges and possibly a bit on the door seals. No creaking from it anyway. Maybe you need a thicker grade of silicone so it stays put.

Down here in Brighton they use Vasiline :rofl::rofl:

you dirty old man...

Have you tried something like AutoGlym Vinyl and Rubber care : Autoglym - car cleaning products, car care products, car valeting, car detailing ?

The near-side rear passenger door on my 55 plate started creaking like a haunted house last week for reasons I can't figure. I had my wife chauffeur me around for half an hour until I tracked the problem down to the top of the door frame. That evening I applied V&R to all my door seals with a sponge, including both the body-side and door-side interior seal and the door-side exterior seal and not a squeak or creak from them since.

I also spent most of the weekend washing both cars, including the engine bays  and used the sponge method to apply it to all the engine bay plastics. They came up a treat!

That Autoglym stuff is the dog's danglies. I don't have creaking seals :P but it makes them look all shiny and new.

Personally I'd keep the vaseline away from the rubber just in case it does something nasty. Silicon grease would be safer.

I'd take it to a dealer and complain, if that fails pester Skoda Customer Services, if that fails complain to the Society of Motor Manufacturers. After about 8 months of hassle I eventually managed to get my seals replaced through this route, and that noise has not come back. If I were you I wouldn't mention trying to resolve the issue yourself, as it led Skoda to claim that this has invalidated the warranty in my case.

Mine is an estate, made in June 2008. One dealer told me that it is more of a problem on the estates, probably something to do with the shape of the back doors. I am convinced that there must have been a bad batch of seals, so it would be interesting to know if yours is the same age.

If you try Skoda Customer Services and they say they have never heard of a problem with the seals, feel free to use my registration (RF08 HRX), and it may refresh their memory.

Thanks for the advice - June 1st 2008 here!. I'm pretty sure in is the nearside rear door. So will try to narrow it down before I start to pester the dealer. I wont mention having the cheek to clean my own seals (thus invalidating the warranty!)

Your car must have been in the same shipment as mine. It was delivered to me on June 4th, but was available on June 1st. Is yours an estate? One dealer could reproduce the noise by gently pushing the rear top corner of the door from the outside, while I sat inside. On the estate it was where the door sweeps backwards. I think mine was both sides, but the passenger side was worse.

Mine is a 2005 hatch - same problems on the passenger side. I too sprayed seals, including the rubber on the doors, with a silicon spray and it was heaven for 4-5 days, but gradually returning.

Had this with my last 2.0 FSi. Dealer had to replace seals under warranty - did a poor job I'm afriad - little difference.

What did work, for a long time, was Lakeland silicone treatment. Excellent stuff.

My new 1.8TSi doesn't have a single problem with doorseals - they must have sorted them out.
