Custom or 'Off the Shelf' exhausts?

Featured Replies

What's the gen on custom or model specific exhausts? I don't have many options for my exhaust (there's a nice Remus one but its £££) so I was thinking about a reputable custom exhaust place instead - I've seen nice examples from Pipewerx on here rather than just going to the nearest hit and miss Powerflow seller.

It must make a difference what pipe and box is stuck on the exhaust but won't a good fitter know what will best suit certain cars? How much R&D do exhaust companies actually do on every model they cite fitment for? Especially for a car with a small market for selling parts?

I'm not expecting miracles (+20hp, +20% mpg and Italian V8 noise ) on my car but a little more throatiness from it and no worse economy would be nice and if I go for a cat-back stainless steel now I should never have to worry about it again (the last thing I want is that awful, rattly, "smoker's cough" you get from small Jap 16v's)

Was once explained to me, that you buy an exhaust system that has been tested etc, or go to - effectively - a plumber and get them to bend and weld pipes to the underside of your car that fit the gap.

Hence the question, how much testing, apart from "Wow! It fits", do you think this exhaust has seen: )%202006=>&mod=3&man=Mazda'>Remus linky

seeing that it won't sell many and the RRP is only £300, compared to the opinion of an experienced and good plumber?

link fixed now that forum is behaving

Don't see the issue myself, ~£300 for a stainless zorst isn't bad money.

Most systems (not banana manifolds) for production cars have to be designed on "where is there space to put the boxes?" rather than "what is the optimum distance from the engine to put an expander box using 2.5ID tubing?"

But its more like £400 with VAT and fitting plus a 4” tailpipe is a little big for a 1.6 don’t you think?

Exactly

I checked mine; 2 x 84mm is definitely silly for 110bhp!

I got a cat back custom stainless exhaust from CKS Performance in Watford, highly recommended by a friend of mine. Lifetime guarantee with it too :)
