Rear body brace

So I'm thinking I should try and stiffen the rear body up a bit..... What do you think?

The only rear brace I've found is this one: http://www.wiechers-sport.de/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=20&Itemid=121

Bodge, if you were still after one of these, I actually bought one (in red) which didn't fit (I didn't really expect it too tbh) in my 4x4 (different rear layout). Anyway, to make up for it I went the whole hog and had a 6 point cage fitted..

Back to the point in hand, if you would like it, please pm me and we'll sort something out.

Where did you get the cage from and how much?

Weichers, believe it or not. They appear to be the only company who do an 'off the shelf' cage for the Octavia.

ÜBERROLLBÜGEL UND ÜBERROLLKÄFIGE - Information

Similar to the one in the lower right picture. 6 point, X-brace, side bars and H-brace.

You have two choices (or atleast I did at the time I bought it).

Choice 1: Buy directly from Weichers in Germany.. how's your grasp of German? The only cage they will sell you is one that fits a non-sunroof model UNLESS you drive to them and have one fitted / custom installed. So.. I actually 'removed' my sunroof completley and replaced it with polycarbonate, good weight saving option too :D

Choice 2: You know skinny guy from 5th Gear? The one with the BMW? He 'owns' a company that mods BMW's and they can buy Weichers cages and have them imported. Thats who I bought mine through. The name of the company has slipped my mind but I could look back through my emails and get a number if really wanted it?

It cost me around £790 delivered and I fitted it myself over a long weekend.. but be warned.. its not easy!! You know those little metal ring-type puzzles you get in Christmas crackers.. they hold NOTHING on fitting a cage into an Octavia!!

In terms of preventing body shell twisting, the rarb will actually make this worse (the same twisting load is applied to the car under cornering but now the rear axle absorbs less of it so the additional stress has to go somewhere).

Obviously the body will twist very little compared to the original rear axle so fitting the rarb stiffens up the car in terms of handling but it causes additional twisting of the body shell instead.

The VRS (at least in hatchback form) comes with the nicely set up supports in the rear of the car. These are triangular so essentially prevent the wheel arches from bending towards or away from the floor of the car. Since the tringle is the strongest possible shape, these are the best way to do this.

The strut you pictured will do very little (if anything) to solve your issue since under cornering, one wheel arch will try to fold away from the floor while the other will fold towards it (obviously only by a couple of mills). Putting a strut between these won't do much to prevent that since the rectangle it forms will simple become a paralleogram under load.

Hope that makes sense.

Necro bump.

Actually, I have to disagree with this statement, given the actual purpose of the aftermarket anti-roll bars. If you were talking strictly about the anti roll bar as say in the beam axle then I would agree, but actually the aftermarket RARB's are not really anti-roll bars at all, they are rear sway bars.

What they are actually doing and their main purpose, is not so much stopping the car from rolling (which indeed as you say WOULD introduce more body flex), they are stopping the beam axle from flexing as much, by attempting to brace the hubs, stopping them from bending towards each other. In order to do this, the rear grip is actually purposely reduced. Because of this, there will not likely be any increased body twist at all.

YES, they do also help with reducing body roll and this would in tern increase body twisting, but given the primary role and the reduced grip I would have to say that it is not increased at all.
