No 1.8TSIs!

Featured Replies

Having test driven a 140CR Elegance (commented upon in another thread) I want to try the alternative 1.8TSI. Having spoken to as many dealers within 100 miles of home as I can none of them have or intend to have a 1.8TSI demo. Skoda UK couldn't help either - they don't have fleet cars and can't tell me which, if any, dealers have ordered a 1.8TSI!!

Anybody come across one anywhere?

Station Garage in Ewhurt, Surrey have one (see the ex-demo Yetis thread)

Seems most dealers have the 140-TDI.

Having driven the Yeti itself, could you maybe get a test drive in a 1.8TSI Octavia or Superb to see what the engine is like?

It seems that 1.8TSIs in almost any vehicle are thin on the ground. One (otherwise very helpful dealer) suggested trying the Octavia 1.4TSI and imagining a more powerful engine (!) - not sure that'll help. I'll check with Station Garage though, thanks Octavia T81.

Hobin in Manchester have one on the road.

Royce Roberts in Hull have an SE 1.8TSI; was unregistered when I saw it at the weekend.

Discussed the 1.8TSI (as I had considered it myself) with my dealer, they indicated that if Octi Scout sales were anything to go by then they would not be taking any orders.

It doesn't really surprise me that the 1,8 isn't attracting that much custom when you consider the awful fuel consumption figures, the punitive RFL that you'll be forking out for it, compared to a diesel powered vehicle with its better fuel consumption & lower RFL costs too.

I'd imagine that the residuals on it will be pretty dire too.

Remembered James at Allams Skoda ordered a 1.8TSI, see thread:

Quick! About to factory order a Yeti!

Its a long way but there is a Demo 1.8TSi Elegance in Muscavado Metallic with Panoramic roof at Carrs Skoda, Indian Queens in Cornwall....

Looks as though you lucky Southerners are going to get both petrol and diesel options and the rest of us just diesel - what does that say I wonder?:D

LOL... not the old petrol vs diesel thing again. I can't see the 1.8TSI being so much more worse than the 140 diesel, hell I've run a 140 and I#m moving to a TSI.

The cost difference vs the mileage just doesn't stack up for me, hence going back to petrol. The 1.8 is a brill engine and I've no problem getting one.

Lolz @ derv

You are a southerner :D

The boundaries have moved - ' The North South Divide' - the North is now defined as Wales and counties north of Gloucestershire, Leicestershire & Lincolnshire .

Tee-hee - actually I AM a Southerner, just hiding out in Leicestershire:)

Interesting point about the petrol v diesel debate, which will probably go on and on for some time. But there is an interesting article in this month's What Car which, to summarise, suggests that diesel fuel costs are temporarily low - they go into the reasons - and that last year's 20% differential seems quite likely to return.

If it does, the MPG differentials become much less important (assuming they can be believed to start with), so it would come down to other factors when deciding between the two engine options.

And what's wrong with that!!!!!

As stated in other threads would have liked to have gone back to petrol but with only a £500 saving in purchase cost, plus £80 a year extra RFL and the mpg factor persuaded me to go deisel again.

Remember as from next year the 'showroom tax' comes in and only effects the TSI.

If SUK had priced the 1.8TSI £1700 cheaper to buy than the 2.0TDI 140 as with the Octavia Scout, then I would have defiantly gone petrol.

Have I misread or did someone say there are no TSI's in the north, Manchester & Hull fall in to the north surely.

Seeing as most posters here are going, or would go, for the diesel, it will be interesting to see if decent discounts start to appear on the apparently unloved TSI. If so, the economic differences may start to disappear, but I agree that the net difference in buying price will need to be at least £1500 and not the current £510.

If the TSI 1.2 DSG had been availble loads would have been orderd for thos who want a carrier and not so much off road

The Yeti isn't selling so well in CZ yet from what I hear, as everyone is waiting for the 1.2TSI to come on stream. The engines I'd consider myself are 1.2TSI, 1.8TSI or 170TDI. I want Elegance spec but the 1.2 is about £4k cheaper than the other 2 so if I want more power might have to go 2nd hand!

I was wondering what figures/statistics you used to back up your assertions? I have just ordered a Octavia Elegance Estate 1.8TSI DSG and, beforehand, had looked at the relative merits of petrol and diesel. For comparison with the car I have ordered I looked at the Octavia Elegance Estate 2.0 TDI PD DSG.

1.8TSI 2.0TDI

Price 18630 20120

Top speed 138 128

0-62 7.9 9.7

CO2 155 158

VED Band G G

Combined Fuel mpg 42.8 47.1

Fuel cost/12000mls £ 1122 1158

So your "awful fuel consumption" comment - yes the diesel is better (as expected) but is actually more expensive to run per annum!

"Punitive RFL" - the annual VED (and "showroom tax" another poster referred to) is actually the same.

I took the view that the TSI offers better performance, has the same running costs and is nearly £1500 cheaper to buy! Even if you compared the TSI to the 1.9TDI DSG (which I don't think is a valid comparison as the performance figures are nothing like comparable) you would find the 2 cars have an identical purchase cost (well within £10!), are in the same VED band and have the same annual fuel costs.

With the Octavia yes the 1.8TSI is financially viable but not with the Yeti.

The 1.8TSI is only £510 less than the TDI CR 140, plus the 4WD effects the CO2.

1.8TSI = 189g/km

TDI 140 = 157g/km

April next year the new ‘first-year rates’ will apply:

J 186 - 200 £425.00

G 151 -165 £155.00

I have to agree - the 1.8TSI looks relatively overpriced in its Yeti form. What has really surprised me is how much the Nos are changed when the same engine is linked to a different gearbox/drive/ body shell set up.

Think I'll stick with the Octavia where the petrol/diesel comparisons are reversed!

If they can't even get the basic figures correct , I'd question their conclusions too.

Diesel was never 20% more than unleaded.

At the peak , unleaded was about £1.21 and Diesel £1.34

Interesting - I remember very well a big argument a diesel customer had with a poor petrol attendant in Sainsbury's (who could clearly do nothing about it) when the petrol/diesel prices were at their greatest difference and the customer questioned why diesel was 20p per litre more expensive - at the time that meant almost 20% difference.
